Meet Yak – A Gentle Giant Whose Heart Has Been Waiting Far Too Long For two long years, Yak has watched other dogs come and go—each one leaving the shelter behind, while he remains. Despite being one of the most beloved dogs in the entire shelter, Yak has only received a handful of applications. Each time, hope bloomed… only to be crushed by silence or rejection. And still, he waits. Yak is a roughly 3-year-old Mastiff mix with a body built for power and a heart made for love. He’s big, goofy, loyal, and affectionate—a total baby in the body of an athlete. The staff and volunteers can’t say enough about him. He’s truly everyone’s favorite, not just because of his stunning looks, but because of the deep sweetness that radiates from him once he feels safe. What Yak needs isn’t much—but it’s everything to him. He’s looking for a foster or foster-to-adopt home where he can finally exhale. A peaceful place with one or two committed adults who understand large dogs and are ready to give him the structure, patience, and unconditional love he deserves. Right now, Yak does best as the only pet, but with time and trust, he may be able to welcome another dog—or even children—into his world. Yak is not just another shelter dog. He is a soul who has waited far too long for someone to see him and say, “You’re mine.” He deserves better than a kennel. Although we work to potty train all of our dogs, we cannot guarantee full house training before adoption. Regression is a normal part of transitioning to a new home.
