My story

Max is approaching an anniversary none of us feel celebratory about… TWO YEARS at the shelter.He’s changed so much during his stay at Animal Aid, and we think, thanks to the unconditional love of our volunteers and the work of our terrific trainer, Max is finally ready to go home.Max arrived in the Summer of 2023, wary and distant. He’s a big guy with big eyes, and his side-eye was intense! He didn’t want much to do with us. He was anxious – everything scared him, and while he’s NEVER bitten, his barks and jumps certainly did the trick of keeping the “scary” things away!Over time, we won him over with treats, toys, and walks. As we earned his trust, we made an amazing discovery – Max’s true joy, the thing he loves most in this world, is cuddles!!!He’ll lean himself against you and gaze at you with those eyes – and then you’ll watch those eyes close with complete contentness as you rub his back or scratch his ears.Max’s favorite activity? Nap time!Lay on his bed with him, and he’ll snuggle into you (he’s the small spoon). Sing him a lullaby (he likes “rainbow Connection” and “Blackbird”), and he’s fast asleep, smiling.When Max is awake, our trainer is teaching him how to manage his anxiety – to look to his humans for comfort and reassurance when something scary happens.It’s working.Max is healthy, neutered, 65-pounds, and approaching 7-years-old.He would THRIVE in a calm, adult-only home.Adopt Max, and you get a trainer, too! Animal Aid will cover the cost of in-home sessions with the trainer who’s brought him so far already!Come snuggle with Max at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.
