My story

Hi, I’m Petey! I came to Home Fur Good allllll the way back in 2021 and have been waiting for 5 whole years! I am 6 years old now, you do math, that’s basically my whole life! I have a lot of friends here, and my favorite volunteer takes me swimming every week. I’ve gone hiking and camping too! I am the most athletic adventure boy you could ask for. Want to hike 10 miles? I’m in! Want to go for a run around the neighborhood? Yes please! Want to play fetch? That’s my favorite game! I just LOVE being active! Now, you must be wondering why I haven’t been adopted in all this time. Being in the shelter for so long, I’ve developed some “stranger danger”. I don’t know what people are going to do to me when they first meet me or if they’ll be nice, so I use my big bark and show my teeth to get them to go away. That’s easier than possibly being mistreated, so I’ve learned that making myself look “big and scary” at first is the way to be. I meet people with a muzzle to start off, and after a few meets, I am your friend for LIFE. I have never bitten anybody, and my HFG handlers know exactly how to manage my behavior! I have been to Board and Train programs a few times, and my obedience skills are top notch. I actually love to train and learn, keeping my brain active is almost as fun for me as being physically active! I am always ready to learn new things, and my HFG family would provide plenty of funds for continued training in my new home! My behavior can be managed simply in a home. If there are people I don’t know coming over, I’d rather go into my kennel and have some time to myself than be a part of the party. Don’t feel bad, I love taking naps and chewing my bones in my kennel! I don’t need to be muzzled for walks or hikes; I just need you to advocate for me and let people know I don’t want to be petted. My ideal home would be without other pets, I will give you all the love you’ll ever need! I have been with other dogs before and been fine, but I’d rather adjust to home life without having to adjust to a furry friend as well. I’ve been in the shelter so long, I’d love somebody all for myself. A single person or a couple where both people are truly all in would be great. No kiddos for me please! I just want somebody to give me a chance. I know I may not be as easy as a puppy or a dog that wants to be everybody’s friend, but I am so deserving of a real life. I spend every day in the same kennel, and although my HFG family loves me deeply, their heart breaks for me. They tell me my people will come someday, so I just wait. If you can’t take me home, share my story with as many people as you can! I sure hope my day is coming. Please don't hesitate to schedule an appointment to meet Petey by calling 602-971-1334. You can also visit us Thursday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm when we are open for walk-ins.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt PETEY, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
