* KIKA’S ADOPTION FEE IS SPONSORED * Kika / Female / ~3 years old / 60 lbs / Terrier Mix / No dogs, cats, or children / Female-only home / From Mexico / Fostered in Toronto Follow Kika’s journey: @kikaneedsamom Meet Kika — aka Kikachu — your future best friend with the biggest personality and an even bigger heart. Kika is the perfect mix of playful goofball and cozy companion. She’s a certified cozy connoisseur who loves fresh, warm blankets, will carefully select a toy to use as her pillow, and can often be found stretched out dramatically across the floor. She’s also an Olympic-level toy shredder and a dedicated cardboard recycler — but somehow still manages to keep a solid rotation of favourite toys intact. She has full-on conversations with her squeaky toys, knows them all by name, and loves a good game of “rescue the toy from under the ottoman.” She’ll also gently (and persistently!) remind you when belly rubs should absolutely not stop. Kika is currently working with a dog walker weekly, and it’s been a slow, thoughtful build that has been really positive for her. She’s showing that with patience, consistency, and trust, she can successfully build relationships with new people. Kika came to us after she wandered into the home of a shelter volunteer, badly injured and clearly the subject of mistreatment. Despite everything she went through, she somehow knew to find a safe place to ask for help. Today, she is thriving in foster care with steady guidance and has graciously shown us her true, joyful personality. She’s smart, expressive, and full of quirky charm — the kind of dog who keeps you laughing every day. But beyond the silliness, Kika forms deep, loyal bonds with her people. Once you’re in her circle, you’re her person — and she will trust you fully, follow your lead, and look to you for everything. Kika has a working-breed personality — alert, intelligent, and always ready for what’s next. She thrives with structure, routine, and a confident female handler. She enjoys her walks, exploring, loves a good game of ball, and even climbs snow piles like a little mountain goat. She walks well overall, though she can pull at times, and her foster is currently working on introducing a Halti to support her on walks — it’s been introduced and they are continuing to build her comfort with it. Kika is also crate trained and muzzle trained, and already has trusted relationships with both a vet and dog sitter, which will help support a smooth transition into her future home. Kika is looking for a female-only, adult-only home with someone who understands or is open to learning about dogs who need a bit of time to build trust. Understandably, Kika does not immediately trust strangers. She will need an adjustment period where she may show some guarding behaviours, including around food, and will benefit from clear structure, space, and thoughtful handling. These behaviours are not directed at her people, but rather at unfamiliar individuals. Men, in particular, are scary for Kika. While she can pass them outdoors without issue, she is not comfortable sharing her indoor space and will use barking or growling to communicate that discomfort. She does well when crated in another room during male visitors and settles with proper management. Kika is not leash reactive — she does not initiate conflict with other dogs and has remained calm even around reactive dogs. She can enjoy friendly interactions on walks and has made a few dog friends along the way. Kika learned to trust her female foster — which is why we are looking for a similar environment to set her up for success. She is best suited as the only pet in the home, though she can enjoy friendly interactions with dogs out on walks. Kika is a truly special dog who has overcome a difficult past and is now ready for her person — someone patient, understanding, and ready to build a deep, meaningful bond. With the right match, Kika is an incredibly rewarding, loyal, funny, and loving companion who will give you her whole heart. Her foster is happy to support approved adopters to ensure a smooth transition and set everyone up for success. Kika has mild/moderate enamel hypoplasia which is thinning of the enamel on her teeth. Homecare will help with brushing but she may require professional dental cleaning in the future. Kika should avoid hard chews, toys, and treats as her teeth will be more prone to breaking during play. Kika also does best on a lamb protein diet. Kika will also require routine anal gland expression approximately every 2 months.
