My story

Sweet lady Maggie, an approximately 7 year old Labrador mix, is looking for a new home and family.  Sadly, her 90 year old owner has  suffered health issues that have greatly progressed and is in a nursing home and can no longer care for her.    She had formed a strong bond with the aging owner and now, with patience and kindness, has learned to trust a couple of family members   Maggie is spayed, between 40-45 pounds, microchipped, in good health, and up-to-date with all of her vetting.    From the primary family caregiver: "Maggie will need a few weeks of patience during her transition to a new home. She was a flight risk initially and got away and was on the run for 6 days while we searched tirelessly for her. She was retrieved by animal services and after that was stuck to me like glue, so secure doors and a leash are a must going forward. There are no kids or other pets in our home, so we have no experience to offer with respect to children or other pets (although pets will come during my sister's foster time).  Maggie does not guard her food. She is better outside than inside. It is clear her comfort place is outside but has settled well into our home. Maggie walks beautifully on a leash and reliably comes when called. She’s curious and playful outdoors, loves to explore and bask in the sunshine. Maggie adores chasing balls—she’ll fetch for hours in a secure, fenced yard. She enjoys meeting other dogs while on leash, though her excitement sometimes gets the best of her, so we’re working on polite introductions. Maggie is learning to welcome visitors at home and will bark at doorbells or when she believes there is a threat to her home, but quiets with gentle commands. She takes treats from others gently but prefers to retreat to her safe distance after greeting or when she's feeling overwhelmed, she will go to her bed and lie down, but she is making progress every day as she is exposed to more visitors and friends. Maggie will whine to go outside in the fenced yard where she roams around and comes back to the door to come in but waits patiently and never barks. Ideally, she is in a one- or two-person home where she can quickly feel safe. She loves attention and pats and rubs and takes well to affection over time"   March 28, 2026, 11:35 am

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Maggie, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
