He is a very tiny, super lovable, 8-year-old Yorkshire Terrier weighing only 3.5 pounds. Latte came to Pound Dog via another shelter where he had been surrendered when his previous owner passed away. It’s clear that Latte had been well loved given how affectionate he is. However, little Latte wasn’t getting all the necessary care and attention he needed, likely due to his owner dealing with their own medical issues. When Latte arrived, his teeth were in terrible condition. His teeth had significant decay and were literally falling out. He was quickly seen by our vet where they removed all his remaining teeth helping him to feel much better. However, because his teeth had been left in such poor condition for so long this caused significant bone loss to his lower jaw. Latte is healing well from his dental procedure, but his new owners will need to be mindful of the limitations with his jaw. He will need to eat wet food and softened kibble as his ability to chew is compromised due to his jaw and lack of teeth. There are no longer any immediate oral health issues or concerns, and we believe he will do fine going forward provided a little extra care is taken with his meal preparations. Aside from the dental issues he encountered, the vet found Latte to be in good health. He is neutered, up to date on his vaccines and has been microchipped. Latte currently lives with two other small dogs in his foster home and generally gets along well with them. He tends to prefer the companionship of his human over other dogs and doesn’t try to initiate play or interact very much with other dogs. He would likely be fine in a home with another small calm dog, but larger dogs, or overly excited dogs would likely be too intimidating for him. It’s unknown if he get’s along with cats but given his calm nature it’s suspected he would be fine with a dog savvy cat. Latte would do well in most home environments whether it be a quiet apartment, townhouse, detached or semi-detached home. He rarely barks and is very calm. Ideally Latte would be best suited for an adult-only home with owners who have experience caring for very small, fragile dogs. A home with children would not be suitable as it would be too overwhelming for an extra small dog. Latte absolutely adores his family and is very affectionate. He is the definition of a lap dog and will happily sit on your lap for hours. In fact, as soon as you sit down, he will want to snuggle up on your lap. Given how small Latte is, going up and down large flights of stairs or jumping on and off furniture can sometimes be a challenge for him. Because of this his owner will need to be agile enough to bend down to lift and carry him when necessary. Latte is housetrained to go to the bathroom outside and is also trained to go on pee pads. He is very sensitive to the extreme cold, so going to the bathroom outside can sometimes be a struggle on the colder winter days. Having a small patch of ground shoveled and free of snow helps to make it easier for him to do his business outside. In his foster home we also try to have a pee pad down near the patio door for the times it’s too cold for him to tolerate going out. He won’t usually go to the door to show when he needs to go outside, but he will signal in other more subtle ways to let you know when he needs to be let out to go to the bathroom. Latte is crate trained, but we have found it easier to use an X-pen for him instead of a crate. The X-pen allows for some additional room for a peed pad to put down in case he needs to go to the bathroom unexpectedly in the middle of the night. He happily goes into his crate or X-pen with very little fuss. He may bark once or twice, but will quickly settle in. Latte is well behaved but doesn’t appear to have had much formal training as he hasn’t shown an understanding of basic commands. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process. Basic obedience training will help to expand Latte’s abilities, but more importantly will help to further build his confidence and socialization. As mentioned, Latte is not a fan of the colder weather, but he does walk well on a leash on nicer days. If going outside in the winter, he will need to wear a coat or a sweater. Yorkshire Terriers are a non-shedding breed, so his owners will also need to have him groomed at regular intervals to keep his coat tidy and avoid matting. If you’re looking for a sweet, calm and loving companion, then Latte might be the dog for you. He is timid, but quickly warms up to people and would love to find the perfect forever home to integrate into.
