My story

Hi. I’m Chomps. Yes… that Chomps. I’m the complete small-bulldog package — five years old, currently weighing in at 38 pounds and proudly gaining (as I should). I came to Freedom Frenchie Rescue from an animal shelter in Los Angeles, and getting me to Arizona was quite the adventure. A transporter stepped up to adopt me on the rescue’s behalf while picking up other dogs, and despite some unnecessary shelter drama that doesn’t matter anymore, I made it safely and comfortably to Arizona. That’s the only part that counts. Ball Is Life (and I Mean That Literally) Let’s be clear about something important right away — ball is life for me. I am deeply obsessed. My favorite ball is a rubber one with grooves, and Mo has made sure I’m very well stocked. I love sunbathing more than just about anything, especially when I can lounge with two balls tucked under my neck and my chin resting peacefully on one like I’m living my best luxury bulldog life. Because I love my ball so much, I can sometimes resource guard it if someone gets too close. Most dogs understand my warning, but a few don’t, which can lead to mishaps. The rescue is actively working with me on this, and I’m responding very well. When redirected, I stop growling quickly, but consistency is important. I’m learning that there are plenty of toys, no one is taking anything from me, and playing with other dogs can actually be even more fun. With time, trust, and follow-through, I continue to improve every day. My “That Escalated Quickly” Medical Chapter When I arrived at the rescue, I had a large mass above my tail, so surgery was scheduled to remove it and to neuter me at the same time. Everything seemed to go smoothly, and once surgery was finished, a volunteer picked me up to bring me back to Mo’s house. Then, completely out of nowhere, I started bleeding everywhere — it looked like a full-on murder scene in the car. Luckily, the volunteer was only about two miles away, turned around immediately, rushed me back to the vet, and carried me straight inside. The vet staff jumped into action, and thankfully, the people waiting for their appointments were incredibly understanding. It turned out I hadn’t been bleeding during surgery or immediately afterward, but a blood vessel hadn’t been fully cauterized. I went into emergency surgery, had additional stitches and staples placed, and came through like a champ. I have since healed beautifully and am once again very active and very much myself. Food, Trust, and My Inner Vacuum Cleaner I absolutely love food, but I eat so fast that I have to use a slow feeder to prevent choking. It’s frustrating for me at times, but it keeps me safe. Everyone at the rescue is fed in their crate for safety, and I will resource guard my food in my crate if another dog hovers nearby. This is something we continue to work on as I build trust and confidence. I’m learning that food always comes, toys are always available, and love is guaranteed. My current diet consists of Zignature Fish probiotic kibble mixed with Tucker’s raw salmon. I eat a cup and a half in the morning and a cup and a half in the afternoon, with several snacks in between. I take treats extremely gently from your hand, and I have a signature side-eye stare that I use while waiting for you to “accidentally” drop food — even when you’re not actually holding any. Potty Training & Life Lessons Potty training is still a work in progress. I used to pee on my crate mat consistently, so the rescue removed it altogether. Yes, it’s unfair. Yes, it’s tough love. But it works. Since removing the mat, I haven’t had any accidents in my crate, and we’re continuing to reinforce good habits every day. Teeth? Never Heard of Her. Let’s talk about my teeth — or lack thereof. I don’t have many, especially on the bottom. I’ve got my canine, although even that one isn’t fully intact. Despite this, I do just fine and have no trouble eating or enjoying treats. As you can tell from my photos, my smile is more gums than teeth, and it only adds to my charm. Spa Life, Snorts & Bulldoggery I don’t mind baths at all. I’ll just sit there and soak it in like a polite little bulldog gentleman. My first bath required four full washes because I was extremely dirty, but who’s counting? My nose stays crusty no matter how much it’s cleaned or moisturized with cocoa butter, but that’s Arizona desert life for you. I’m very vocal, but not in a barking or whining way. I communicate through snorts, snuffles, and bulldog chatter. If you could speak snort, we’d have full conversations. My farts are loud, frequent, and unapologetic, and my naps are long and luxurious. About BOAS Surgery Yes, I could benefit from BOAS surgery, but it is not medically necessary at this time. It does not currently affect my quality of life, and given my previous difficulty healing, the rescue and vet have decided not to take that risk. I live in Arizona, my outdoor time is carefully managed, and I am never allowed to play in the heat. Now that I’m fully healed, the focus is on letting me enjoy life safely as I am. My Ideal Home I’m looking for a home that understands bulldogs and is willing to provide structure, consistency, and continued guidance with toys and feeding routines. I need someone who appreciates snorts, naps, noisy farts, and a dog with a big personality packed into a compact body. In return, I offer endless laughs, loyal companionship, gentle treat-taking, and sun-drenched naps by your side. About Friends, Cuddles & Learning How to Be Home If you’re hoping I’ll instantly be best friends with your dog or jump right into cuddle mode, that can absolutely happen — but it will take time. I’m still learning about life and what it means to live in a real home. Everything is new to me: the routines, the people, the expectations, and the love. Please don’t come into adoption with super high expectations of me right away. And honestly, don’t have unrealistic expectations of any rescue dog coming into your home. We don’t know you yet. We don’t know your dogs. Trust has to be built, not forced. I need time to understand what kind of love you’re offering and to feel safe enough to accept it fully. When that happens — and it will — the friendships, cuddles, and connection grow naturally and mean so much more. Final Words from Me I’ve been through a lot, and I’ve come out stronger, happier, and ready for my forever home. If you’ve got room in your heart — and maybe space on your Amazon list for grooved rubber balls — I might just be your guy. Love, Chomps Chomps is neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, you can apply for him on freedomfrenchierescue.org. He is located in Mesa, AZ and his adoption donation fee is $1100.00. *Please Note: All learning and guidance must continue in their new home. A dog’s behavior can change with a new environment and energy, and every family’s dynamic is different. What works or is allowed in one foster home may not be the same in yours, so consistency, patience, and continued training are key to their success.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Chomps, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
