My story

This shining star is Nova, a 3-year-old Mini Australian Shepherd that weighs 28 pounds. She absolutely lives up to the intelligence of the breed and could exercise for days without batting an eye. Nova originally came to us about a month ago, when Manhattan @nycacc reached out to us. She was an owner surrender at the shelter, but was rapidly declining in the overwhelming environment. Staff didn’t feel she was safe or thriving in her kennel or on walks; her stress and anxiety manifested in audible distress in the kennel and fighting the leash on walks.Her time spent in foster care has focused on building her confidence and independence - when she first came to us, Nova lacked self-soothing skills and required near constant supervision. She’s now doing immensely better with her crate training, coping by herself, and settling in both the comfort of home as well as public spaces. She needs an experienced adopter willing to commit to her long-term success and well-being by continuing her training and support. Not only is Nova brilliant, but she also requires a lot of physical and mental stimulation to keep her feeling fulfilled from day to day.Nova is such a love bug, though, often rolling onto her back and presenting her belly in all its glory. She adores people and will quickly make herself at home in your lap if she’s allowed. Training is easy with her need for people pleasing and her drive to excel. She’s done well in foster with other pups and adjusts quickly to any change, but typically gravitates towards other female dogs! She’s a girl's girl at heart. We strongly encourage you to apply in advance of the event and participate in a virtual interview.
