My story

Meet River – A Special Boy with a Big Heart River is a sweet, affectionate dog who loves attention, lounging in the yard, and soaking up the sun. He has a neurological condition likely stemming from a cerebellar issue, which gives him a unique, high-stepping gait and some exaggerated movements. He also has a significant startle reflex, so caution is warranted until he becomes familiar with a new routine. While his coordination is affected—especially in his back legs—River has learned to adapt and continues to enjoy a happy, good-quality life. He's currently on medication (Gabapentin) which has helped manage suspected pain stemming from his condition. While he may never be a “typical” dog neurologically, he's shown that with love and stability, he can thrive. River is not in pain, and he remains alert, engaged, and responsive. It is unknown whether his condition is progressive, despite the testing he has received at SoHumane. While here, his condition has only improved. We are adopting him out with full transparency and the understanding that he’s a little different. River is looking for a patient, understanding home where he can be cherished just as he is. With the right person, he’ll make an incredibly loving and rewarding companion The adoption fee for all dogs includes spay/neuter, basic vaccination, parasite preventative, and a 24PetWatch Microchip.
