My story

Meet Tommy Boy! 💙🐾 Age: 1 1/2 Breed: Pit/Boxer mix Color: Black and white Weight: 56# Temperament with- ● Dogs: Tommy is energetic and just wants to play with the foster fur siblings, that he doesn't understand when we need breaks to cool down. The youngest female fosters fur sibling and his humans are helping him on how to play, and he is learning! Tommy will need command reinforcement to help harness all that fun loving energy! Even with all his excitement he is able to back away when corrected by the oldest female dog in the house which shows how smart Tommy is, because the old lady just likes her space. Tommy has not shown any aggression to the foster fur siblings and just wants to love on them and play. ● Cats: unsure, he did bark at the kittens at Ruby Whiskers ● Children: haven't introduced him to kids yet, but I am sure he would do great! ● Strangers: Tommy is working on meeting strangers outside of his home. Sometimes Tommy watches others with curious eyes, other times he likes to bark to let them know he's around. Training Needs: We are just so excited to explore the whole new world in our home that sometimes we jump up on the counters to see what is on them and think that we are being a sou chef in the kitchen with our foster mom. We do well with our correction of the word off and can sit down like a good boy! When our humans come back into the house, we have that puppy energy to jump and give big hugs, but who can blame Tommy when he's just so excited and full of love. We are working on learning the word off so we can get the pets from our human that we desire. We are also working on the puppy nibbles and bites because of all our energy. Tommy needs re direction for that energy in the form of bones, chew toys or running in the yard which he does good with. Crate Trained: Yes! Potty Trained: Yes! Activity Preferences: Tommy loves to get all that puppy energy out by going outside so he can run around the yard or go for walks and explore. This helps calm us down a bit. We also don't mind laying around outside while the humans work on some yardwork. We have been such a good boy that we don't even try to take anything from the yard thinking it's a toy, which lets the humans continue to do all the hard work! Inside Tommy likes to explore the rooms and check in on the humans to see what they are up to. Tommy still loves to play inside as well and thinks he's trying out for American ninja that we do some pretty cool tricks of jumping on couches when we run after our younger foster fur sibling. I mean we are playing tag and working on our ninja skills, right? We are able to learn that playtime needs to be on the floor and not the couches. When we are ready to snuggle up to the humans on the couch we like to have the Miley Cyrus song on "wrecking ball" because we like to come in hot and ready for snuggles at times. We are starting to realize that we don't need to be that excited for snuggles and can jump up on the couch with a softer approach. Maybe Tommy never got to be on the couch so he's so excited he has the opportunity to! Once we're settled we do great with laying on floors or couches and taking some naps or snuggling up to the humans for some cozy time. Describe the ideal furever home for your foster: Tommy would do great in a home where he can go for walks or runs to get his energy out while also being able to cuddle up on the couch to watch shows and movies. If you don't mind dogs on a bed at night, I am sure he would love that! He truly loves to be around his humans and be as close as possible. I mean so close he likes to have his head up against yours, so you know how much he cares. Tommy would do best in a home with a dog that matches his size and energy levels but would also do great as the only dog if needed. Due to not meeting kids yet, Tommy would probably do well with older kids due to his size, but we will keep you updated as we get some meets in! Cute things your foster does that could be endearing or a personality point that would make people want to meet him/her: Tommy truly is a loveable boy with his sweet eyes and gentle nature. He loves to put his paw around you when you give him kisses as a way to give you a hug. He has cute tricks with his one ear that likes to flop over or stand up straight. Tommy loves to lay on his back to feel extra relaxed and loves belly rubs and scratches. When you are on a couch he will curl up behind you to snuggle and keep you warm. He loves to help in the kitchen when you are preparing or prepping meals with his curiosity and will sit and lay by you until you are done. Tommy does great on leash. The only time we pull is when we see wildlife and are easily corrected to get back on track. Tommy also knows sit, down and come and is learning gentle when taking treats. Apply to meet Tommy at rubywhiskers.org/adopt Please only apply if you are ready to meet and welcome a new companion into your home within five days of approval at rubywhiskers.org/adopt This dog is currently located in Chicago's southwest suburbs and can be seen by appointment once an adoption application is completed and approved by the rescue. Please note that we cannot hold dogs for any reason. If the dog or puppy is not yet fully vetted, we can only consider applications from adopters within an hour's drive or 40 miles of Lemont, IL, due to required vet visits at our partner veterinarians. For fully vetted dogs or puppies, we welcome applications from out-of-state or beyond the 40-mile radius. Breed and Age Information: Unless the puppy was born in our care, we cannot guarantee the breed or age. Breed and age estimates are based on veterinary advice, shelter records, physical appearance, and information provided by previous owners. The adoption fee includes: Spay/neuter (performed at one of our partner veterinarians as scheduled by the rescue) Microchip Rabies vaccine DHPP vaccine Bordetella vaccine 4DX test (Heartworm, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichia, Lyme Disease) General wellness care, including deworming, heartworm prevention, and flea/tick prevention Your adoption fee also helps support medical care for other rescue animals, including heartworm treatments, surgeries, and emergency care. Spay/Neuter Policy: We spay/neuter dogs at 16 weeks or older, at the discretion of the rescue and in consultation with our partner veterinarians. While some veterinarians recommend delaying the procedure based on a breed’s projected size, as a rescue, our primary goal is to prevent unwanted litters. Spaying and neutering also provide significant health benefits, including cancer prevention and reducing behavioral issues. The American Animal Hospital Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association support pediatric spay/neuter for cats and dogs as early as 8–16 weeks. We carefully assess each case to determine the best timing for the procedure.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Tommy, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
