My story

Chief is an 8 year old, male Golden Retriever looking for a special kind of home, cause he is a special kind of boy. When Chief came to GRRAND, his former owner reported to us the following: "Chief is seemingly blind as he has cataracts in both eyes which causes him to run into a lot of things. He seems to have some joint pain when going up and down stairs at our house. He was severely overweight when we got him, but he has slimmed down some since then, but still seems to be stiff when using stairs at times and we think he will need a home with minimal steps and no small children in the home." Chief gets along well with everyone, but he has a big issue with wanting to chew all things and everything he should not, and with that, a home with lots of kid toys, socks, shoes, towels, rags, etc all over the place, is not a good environment for him. If he was to go to a home where he was the "main man" and was kept busy, this could possibly change in time. GRRAND vets are now working on finding out how severe his limitations are with his eyes and mobility issues, and we will update as we learn more.  Our GRRAND volunteer who helped with Chief yesterday says:  "Here are some things I learned about Chief. He is very smart and loving - we were very good friends almost instantly.  He navigates by sound and touch, and very impressively at that.  I think he needs his forever home much sooner than later with a human(s)  who will help him learn the house and yard and keep their home very tidy so Chief doesn't find things to chew especially in transitions to a new place. Chief is very well behaved and is a people pleaser.  He did not jump up on me, just leaned in, gave a few kisses, and he loves to be petted, especially rumpus scritchies. He doesn't like to be left alone outside but is perfectly content to be outside if someone is with him or if the next door neighbor dog he talks to (friendly, no aggression) is outside. A fenced in yard would be best for Chief to help keep him from wandering off and making sure he has physical boundaries. We are not sure if he had been taken on regular walks but I get the impression he would enjoy guided walks on a routine path. Chief rode in the back of my SUV for 30 minutes and then for 2 straight hours, and just laid down and didn't chew anything (liner, 2 toys he came with).  His family said he has never been crated and that he was fine loose in their home alone, except that he would chew items and he loves to remove the stuffing from stuffed animals. (we would recommend no soft toys for him.) I am going to try some of my whistler Chuck It balls with him and a ball that makes sounds when you roll it and will update later.   Chief has a tail that is a metronome...constantly wagging as he walks and sits and he has gorgeous teeth. He is quiet as I never heard him bark while we were together and he clearly loves people. So he is an all around BEST boy, just needs a home where the humans will help him get to know his surroundings, not leave anything out to chew (except safe toys), will spend time with him outdoors, and allow lots of time for snuggles." Please check back for more info and we will update as we learn more about Chief, and fill out an app at GRRAND.org if you think you would like to meet this handsome guy! ##2500749##
