My story

Animal Profile: Bernie is an approximately 1 year old, 9 lb male Chihuahua mix that joined us from San Bernardino in California on 8/17. Bernie has almost fully recovered from the paw he fractured back in early July. He was treated with a splint in CA and is feeling so much better!  Foster Update: Say hello to Bernie, also known as Mr Happy. Despite ending up as a stray with a broken leg at an over-crowded shelter, Bernie has remained a VERY happy, playful, and sweet little guy. And despite the cast (coming off soon) he is quite adept at the zoomies! Bernie is so ready to find his loving forever home.  Estimated to be around 1 year old, Bernie definitely brings young dog energy and enthusiasm to everything he does. He came to me with zero basic training and a complete lack of experience on a leash. He loves going on a walk, but will need continued leash training. He can be a little bit barky when he sees other dogs, but is easy to correct. Again, this will improve with ongoing training and the confidence that comes with more experience being out and about in the world. Bernie loves hanging out in the sun, sniffing around in the yard, playing with stuffies, and getting belly rubs. He's not a hang-out-in-your-lap kind of guy, but he will plop down next to you and ask for scratches. His fur is super soft and he sheds a lot less than any Chihuahua mix I have fostered. Bernie does well in his crate, including overnight. He will sometimes cry/whimper when he first goes in but quickly settles. He does well in the car, and seems to enjoy going for rides. So far, the only issue I’ve had with him is his complete lack of training. We are working on potty training and he's done well, as long as he's taken out on a very regular schedule, but he will need ongoing discipline. He will also need ongoing training on basic commands and walking on a leash, but he'll pay you back for all your hard work with love and adoration.  Bernie will do best in an active home that's patient with his young dog energy. He will need regular walks, or another dog or kids for him to play and run around with. Because he can jump when he gets excited, kids that are a little bit older would be best. He definitely needs a home with a yard. If  you’re looking for a super cute (did I mention he smiles?!), crazy-happy little dog, Bernie is your guy! Adoption Info: Adoption fee is $575 which includes spay/neuter, core vaccinations per AVMA standards, heartworm test if applicable, recent exam with a veterinarian, and microchip with lifetime registration. Your adoption fee may be tax deductible as DGS is a 501c3 organization. All adoption fees go toward the care of all dogs in our rescue.  Apply Online: www.DogGoneSeattle.org/adoption-application Animal History: This dog was rescued from [Animal Shelter] in California, arriving to foster care in Seattle on [DATE] via [Transport]. This dog will be available for adoption in the greater Seattle area once evaluated in foster care.August 23, 2025, 4:34 pm
