Meet our regal princess, Sophie! Statuesque and graceful, Sophie stands above the pack (literally)! Blessed with perfectly proportioned long legs and frame, this graceful lady fairly glides as she happily prances across the yard and into your heart. Although unsure how Sophie became separated from her original family, it’s clear she had been a beloved pet prior to being rescued from the police/animal control custody of a tiny rural western Oklahoma town. From rescue day, her appearance suggested a history of being spayed, groomed, and somewhat trained. She settled almost immediately after eagerly exploring her new environment. Following an initial day of “meeting” the other dogs in the household through a barrier, Sophie peacefully met each of the other 3 labs in the home individually, then joined them for play in the yard and melded with the group as if they had always been together. She has never tried to steal the other dogs’ toys or food, and getting the most affection from their shared human is their biggest competition! While still mastering some basic commands, Sophie learned “Leave It” within a week- an important skill when sharing life with 3 other adult female labradors! She is content romping in the yard or lazily napping with the other dogs on the floor, but prefers most of all to be snuggled against her human on the furniture (since she believes that’s where she belongs). She is crate trained. With door open, she put herself to bed in a crate at the foot of the bed from the first night, and willingly (with biscuit inducement) crates briefly during the day when needed while her foster is away without ever barking while there. Sophie has free run of the house with the other dogs at all times while her foster family is home and is never destructive. She (like most young labs) occasionally finds mischief if home alone for too long, so crating is occasionally needed while mastering household manners in a new environment, but this transitional phase should end once she becomes established. Being highly compliant, smart, and easily trained, she needs a family committed to helping her soar. Sophie confidently rides in a vehicle as if it is second nature to sit up in her seat like a person, alert & expectant for something exciting to happen. She has visited her foster’s large urban high school, eagerly greeting everyone while being showered with affection. She walks without pulling on her leash, heels, halts, and seems to have had some former training in this area. In the yard, she walks in step with her human, almost as if attached by an invisible leash. On a leash, she has clear preferences such as wanting the side toward the yard rather than the road in the neighborhood, and preferring the aisle over the wall side in public hallways so she can greet people. Still a young dog, she needs consistent reinforcement to contain her puppy-like exuberance, especially when meeting new people or becoming overstimulated. She is easily refocused with correction or a brief crate time to calm and recenter herself. Being a very tall girl, harnessing enthusiasm and not jumping up people is perhaps still her most important skill to fully master as an otherwise completely calm, non-aggressive dog. Princess Sophie meets every new person and situation with the confidence of a dog who has been well loved, not one who was lost or betrayed. She has a giant heart and a gentle spirit. Though something unknown separated her from her past, she is resilient, trusting, and looking for love again. Could you be the family to bring this royal beauty to grace your home and fill your heart?
