Paco is a special situation dog who will require an owner who is familiar with socially neglected dogs and has the patience to continue with the work to with bring him out of his shell. He would have difficulty in a home with children at this point as he becomes anxious whenever people try to impose affection on him. Paco has come a long way since his rescue from a hoarder situation. We'd be lying if we didn't admit he still has a long way to go! Paco is a sweet submissive little chi mix who was initially so timid that he simply cowered in his bed behind his friends with his head down, tail tucked and doing the chi-chi shakes. Since going to foster, however, his personality has come out slowly and he is a busy, active boy - no stuffy is safe in his presence! Paco is just now comfortable enough with his foster that he jumps up on his foster's chair and allows himself to be petted - not cuddled yet, but he's getting there. He appreciates being petted, but will still back away from an outstretched hand most of the time. He has no problem being held or petted once he has been picked up (he will run to his safe spot/bed and let you pick him up there). He no longer cowers and is quite the vocal little watch dog. Paco does not walk on a leash yet, nor does he always come when called - in fact, he runs away if you approach him. He MUST HAVE FENCED YARD - he prefers to come in with the pack or make the in and out process a game of sneak past you! He is learning that he should get excited about dinner time and that treat time is rewarding but competitive so he needs to come close if he wants the payoff (he has just started taking a treat from the his foster's hand) He is so close to turning a corner - maybe he can make that turn with you?Unfortunately, Paco isn't housebroken, so he proudly wears a belly band indoors (it can be applied while he is on his bed/safe space). Paco is used to being part of a pack - he would do well in a home with other dogs once introductions are done. At night, he is used to being confined and usually sleeps in the same bed as another dog from the same situation, Pancho. Our goal is to accurately describe life with Paco and will update as he makes progress in his current foster home. If you think you can step in and take over in his socialization, please apply to foster or adopt!
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Paco, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
