My story

Mae wears a permanent smile, which is pretty amazing considering how she came to rescue. Mae was arrested by police in a small town for vagrancy and was incarcerated at the local pound, actually the area vet clinic. Clinic staff contacted PUP and pleaded with us to take this little sweetie because they were full to the gills (all 8 cells occupied and she was held with two other dogs). A PUP volunteer visited her and couldn’t resist so Mae came into the PUP rescue program. The clinic staff thought she looked like a lab cross. DNA testing from dogs from the area often shows 15-25 different breeds. Most have some shepherd, husky, herding dog like Aussie and even the biggest dogs often have some Chihuahua in the mix. We believe Mae will be a mid-size dog when she is full grown but that is best guess. Since we have no idea who mom or dad are and are guessing at her age (we think 15 weeks), her adult weight is best guess. Her adopter should be prepared to love her if she is larger or smaller than predicted. She was in good health and well fed when she was surrendered to PUP. Mae is living in a foster home with other puppies and an adult dog that is providing adult supervision. She is playful and is enjoying going outside to play and potty, and is using newspapers in the house to do her business. She not yet house broken but she is getting the idea. She visited a neighbor and instantly was attracted to the 8 year old so she had probably lived with children in her previous life. The early months are when puppy learns the social skills needed to be a skilled dog in dealing with other dogs and a good citizen in the human world. Adopters should be committed to getting puppy into lots of new and different human social situations, hearing vacuums, trucks, and rattling garbage cans, meeting people who are clapping, laughing, with hats, tools, bikes and skate boards. AND puppy needs many opportunities to meet and greet dogs of all shapes, sizes and dispositions. Just sharing a home with another dog is not as much doggie socializing as puppy needs. If good canine social skills are not learned and maintained during these early months, it will be very difficult to ever master them. Puppy play dates, trips to the pet store, puppy socialization classes and later, obedience classes are particularly important. If all this doggie time and involvement seems like a good idea, you are up for a puppy! As always, a tired dog is a good dog. Mae has been vet checked, vaccinated including rabies, and de-wormed. She will need two additional puppy vaccinations at the adopter’s expense. We do place puppies outside the metro area if a firm plan for the alter surgery is in place; we do not ship. Her required alter surgery is covered by the adoption fee if it is done at 6 months at the PUP clinic. We require that she be altered at 6 months. If you are at least 21 years old and everyone in your household is on board with adopting a puppy, CALL 651-645-4370 between 7:00 am and 9:30 pm and we will return your call within 24 hours. If you elect to contact us via e-mail it may take several weeks for us to get back to you. Renters must provide proof that you are allowed to have a puppy. If you currently have a companion dog or cat please be prepared to provide a vet reference prior to adoption if requested.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Mae, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
