Now’s the perfect time to adopt! I’m one of the lucky pets featured in Clear the Shelters 2025! My adoption fee is reduced by $50 through September 15! Current Location: King William, VA Meet Pepper Pepper is a 3-year-old, 10-pound Chihuahua mix with a gentle soul and soft eyes that hint at a story she has not yet told. She has been a little shy and reserved in her foster home, as if she is still deciding whether the world can truly be kind. But behind that hesitation is a spark of hope waiting to shine brighter every day. Energy and Personality Pepper is calm, laid back, and happiest when she can quietly observe from a safe spot. She enjoys the comfort of a cozy dog bed and has shown she can sleep through the night peacefully. She may not rush into your arms right away, but she responds with quiet sweetness when offered gentle affection. Training and Behavior Pepper is crate tolerant, though she is not particularly enthusiastic about going in. She shows no destructive tendencies and has a natural calmness that makes her easy to have around. She thrives in an environment that gives her time, patience, and consistency. Social Life Pepper has been fine with other dogs, though she has not yet chosen to play or interact much. Cats and children have not been tested, but her gentle nature suggests she may adapt given the right introductions and support. Special Traits Her biggest gift is her quiet resilience. Though she is cautious at first, you can see her trying, little by little, to believe in the kindness around her. That effort is the spark of hope she carries, waiting for someone patient enough to nurture it. Best Home Fit Pepper will blossom in a home that moves at her pace, with people who can give her steady reassurance and the space to grow. She does not need much activity, just a soft place to rest and the gentle encouragement of someone who sees the potential in her. Veterinary Care Visit to veterinarian for health certificate Up to date on vaccinations for age Spayed Microchipped On heartworm preventative On flea and tick preventative Received worm and parasite treatments This dog tested positive for heartworm disease before arriving to the rescue. Heartworm disease is transmitted to a dog through a bite from an infected mosquito producing a positive test in six months. OPH will treat the dog and provide two weeks of recovery time prior to adoption. Potential adopters will receive detailed information on the disease and their role in completing the recovery process from OPH’s heartworm coordinator. With monthly preventatives, the disease is completely preventable.
