My story

Smooches came to ACCT Philly on August 8th, 2025, after a concerned caller reported that she had been lying on their porch all day. When our Animal Protection Officer arrived, this sweet, medium-sized mixed breed girl happily greeted them. From the moment she arrived, Smooches has lived up to her name—she’s a wiggly, affectionate, kiss-giving sweetheart. She loves meeting new people, is always ready for belly rubs, and has shown interest in other dogs. While she’s still learning leash manners and sometimes gets excited when heading in and out of her kennel, she’s eager to please and responds well to treats. In playgroup, she’s been social and communicative, engaging politely but also setting boundaries when needed. Smooches will thrive with an adopter who can give her a little structure, some training to fine-tune her leash skills, and plenty of opportunities for affection and play. She’s ready to share her big heart and adorable smile with a forever family. She was VERY excited to get out of her kennel, jumping up on the door while I leashed her. Once she was out, she pulled hard to get outside, but then calmed down after she went to the bathroom right away (seems like she's trying to stay house trained). When we went into a yard, she happily sniffed around a bit before coming over for snacks. She's loose and wiggly, with adorable teeth that stick out when she's waiting for treats and ears that are always listening for the sound of the snack pouch opening. She knows sit, takes treats gently, and while she is a little jumpy when she's looking for snacks, she's easy to redirect. Other than when we first got outside, she was easy to walk! When we got back to the kennel, she was reluctant to return, but went in with a bit of leash pressure and a treat. She did show some leash biting as I tried to get the leash over her head using the clip method. I then had to take her out again a few minutes later so another volunteer could refill her water and she almost bust out of her kennel while I tried to leash her. She pulled hard on leash and her body language was uncomfortable, then once again jumped on the door and began trying to bite the leash when it went over her head upon return to kennel. 08/11/2025 Playgroup: smooches had tail slightly higher than middle, with ears back, giving her side soft eyes. Handler oriented, easy to disengage her from anything she's in by just calling her name, calling her to come over when bull entered the yard. He ran right up to Smooches and began sniffing her. She reciprocated by sniffing him. He then put his head over her shoulders and began to lift his paw to mount. She gave him a hard correction with barking and teeth showing easily stopped with the pet corrector. They interacted a few times after that with some light sniffing, then disengaging 08/10/2025 Per staff: A volunteer told me she had a hard time getting her back in. I placed a staff only sign on her for a few hours and had a helper to evaluate this behavior. Coming out she pushed her head into the door, I held the gate tight and then leashed her. She was super social and friendly to both of us, jumping gently for pets and soliciting attention constantly. Going back in she put the brakes on when we got to her row. With some leash pressure she went in and immediately turned around and pushed her way back out. With leash pressure and treats she went back in, and she was jumping at the gate, barking. Treats helped get her off the gate so the leash could be removed. Leveling up to experienced blue 08/10/2025 Behavioral Eval: Kennel Presentation:Smooches had a wiggling body and soft eyes in the kennel. he was easy to leash and came right out once secured. Leash Skills: pulls moderately Sociability: Smooches was very wiggly in the yard and allowed all handling. he showed no interest in play or treat as we spent most of our time on the bench getting belly rubs. Play: minimal interest Dog Interaction: n/a Return to Kennel: he walked right back into his kennel Color Level:gold 08/08/2025 Per staff: Super sweet and wiggly girl. Came right up to me and let me leash. Loves giving kisses. She pulls hard on the leash and doesn’t seem used to it. Probably needs a harness. Seems very interested in other dogs Medical Notes Weight: 57.8 lbs on 08/08/2025 Vaccinations Next Due: Rabies – 08/08/2026 – Scheduled Parvovirus – 08/08/2026 – Scheduled Canine Distemper – 08/08/2026 – Scheduled Adenovirus – 08/08/2026 – Scheduled Parainfluenza – 08/08/2026 – Scheduled Bordetella (Kennel Cough) – 08/08/2026 – Scheduled Vaccination History: Bordetella (Kennel Cough), Adenovirus, Parainfluenza – Bronchi-Shield III (Elanco) – 08/08/2025 – Completed – Lot # E190837A – IN (intranasal) – Exp.
