My foster writes: Clifford is a total goofball! He walks great on the leash, enjoying his surroundings and wagging his tail at everyone who acknowledges him (and we get stopped quite a lot!) he will even lie down at people's feet and show his belly! At home he loves squeaking his toys or chomping on his nylabone until he tires out and takes a fat nap on the couch next to you. Loves just to be near you. He enjoys perching on the window sill to watch passers by. Never ever barks at any dogs or noise in the hallway or street. Just observes. He's still young, but a very fast learner when it comes to being mouthy from excitement. He really aims to please! Sweet goofy potato man who has been loving a restful home to decompress in. He is extremely loyal and loves to be at his person's feet. With consistency and routine (and love and snuggles) he is blossoming into the cutest furry friend ever. For now, maybe a home with just another small dog, or no dogs and children over age 10ish would be great for him. He will make someone very happy!!Clifford is a lively and loving pup enrolled in our Shelter Scholars program, where he's working on managing kennel stress, hyperarousal, and building stronger impulse control. With the help of positive reinforcement, structured enrichment, and calming routines, Clifford is learning how to self-regulate, feel more at ease in his surroundings, and make thoughtful choices-even when he's excited. He's already making progress in slowing down, staying focused, and finding his calm both inside and outside the kennel. Clifford is being set up for success in his foster or forever home, where his training can continue and his joyful, affectionate nature can truly shine. My adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous donor!Meet Clifford!Clifford is a smart, energetic 1-year-old pup found as a stray and brought in by the NYPD. Now, he's looking for an experienced, adult-only home that can help him build confidence and improve his manners through structure and positive reinforcement.Home & Behavior NeedsClifford thrives with patient adopters who understand dog body language. He needs a quiet, stable environment where he can decompress and learn at his own pace. Due to his high arousal and mouthiness, he's not suited for a home with kids.Other PetsHe's shown mixed signals with dogs, so slow, supervised introductions are key. His behavior with cats is unknown.Leash Manners & TrainingClifford can pull and sometimes bites the leash when overstimulated but responds well to redirection with toys. He'll benefit from consistent training.Adoption LevelLevel 3 - For experienced adopters only.Fun FactClifford is treat-motivated and eager to learn-he just needs the right guide to help him shine!A volunteer writes: Between his caramel-colored fur, which is like running my hands along a velvet coat when I pet him; his beautiful almond-shaped eyes; and sweet, playful disposition, there's so much to love about Clifford. Though initially shy with me, he's warmed up a lot and now enjoys back rubs and butt scratches...and if I'm really lucky, he'll even roll over for belly rubs. He loves going to the yard so he can run around and interact; and one of his favorite things is to run up to the gate with his tail wagging whenever a dog passes by, watching until they disappear. Then he's back to zoomies, entertaining himself with a toy (he's a big fan of stuffies), or coming up to me for pets. Little Clifford is just coming out of puppyhood and being a smart, social, engaging pup, would love to continue learning basic manners (he already knows "sit") and how better to handle himself when he gets overstimulated (a squeaker quickly gets his attention) - using only fear-free, positive-reinforcement training. He seems to be housebroken, too. This little pup has lots of potential to blossom into a paws-itively great family member, so come meet him today!
