My story

Meet Rudy, the husky mix. This gentle giant has gone through some transition recently as his guardian passed away and there was no one in the family that could take Rudy in long term. He is a little shy but curious to bond with people he has met at the Shelter. He has the sweetest little tail wag when meeting new people and enjoys being pet. During his time at the Shelter, Rudy has met other dogs and is interested and respectful when greeting. A home with another dog may be a fit after some speed dating at the Shelter. In his previous home, Rudy coexisted nicely with dog-savvy cats. Rudy is a little overweight and would benefit from more steps in his adoptive home. Adopters should plan to work with their vet on a diet plan that is healthy and safe for Rudy to keep him in tip top shape as he ages. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
