Harry Potter ACCT-A-227292 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Harry Potter must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by SATURDAY, AUGUST 23RD at 10AM. Should Harry Potter's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Harry Potter came to ACCT Philly after being found in an indoor horse arena on July 30th. Despite arriving underweight, itchy, and with sore paws, he bounded up to staff with a wagging tail, eager for attention. Much like his namesake, Harry Potter is resilient, friendly, and ready to start a new chapter of his story. He’s affectionate, playful, and very food-motivated (though a bit snatchy with snacks—he’s been through some hard times and is still learning his manners). Volunteers and staff describe him as sweet, loose, wiggly, and quick to lean in for pets. He knows basic cues like sit and down, loves company, and has shown himself to be housetrained. While he hasn’t mastered toys or fetch just yet, he shines when it comes to making people smile. Harry Potter has met other dogs and done well, so please bring all members of your household and any resident dogs along for a meet. Due to his length of stay, Harry Potter is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. If you’re looking for a loyal companion with a touch of magic, Harry Potter is waiting to be the hero of your home. Def potty trained, a bit jumpy, walks good on leash. Per volunteer 8/7: Mild issues returning to kennel. Low energy. Great with everything except tried to hump. Per volunteer 8/3: Low energy. Very gentle, loved affection, likes treats, very sweet + easy. Per volunteer 8/2: Harry Potter was laying down when I approached the kennel. He did not get up initially. I called its name and he did not respond. When I opened the kettle door, Harry then hopped up and came over to the door with mid level tail wagging. He was easily leashed and walked out of the kennel. Once we got outside, he immediately peed then pooped in the grass. He was easy to walk on a loose leash, minimally pulling at the end when he saw other dogs. During our time together, I asked Harry for a sit and a down and he did both. He did see the treat in my hand and started leaning toward it. When I offered him the treat, he snatched it out of my hand so I later tossed him treats. After a bit, I tried to get him to do his sit and down again. He sat and then was interested in the treat and did not go all the way down. (See video- "Harry Potter sits") When petting Harry all over, he stood still with tail mid-level not wagging. When I touched each of his front paws, he gently picked them up. When i got to his back, he turned his head to look at me. After touching each of his back legs, he moved away. (See video- "Harry Potters gets pets all over") I later touched a paw again and he picked it up and I held it for a moment. (See photo) Harry continued to stand there as before. Harry later solicited pets, nudging my hand with his head. He would occasionally look up at me while petting him. He leaned into my leg too. (See "Harry Potter solicits pets") I offered Harry toys and he did not play with them. He stayed with me while I walked around the yard collecting the toys. When I went and sat on the bench hopped up with me, soliciting more pets. (See photos) When other dogs walked by the play yard with volunteers, Harry ran along the fence looking out at them to try to see them. They did not stop to interact. On our walk back to the kennels, we saw other dogs with volunteers in the grass. Harry stood and looked at them. I spoke to some of the individuals from a distance. Harry then whined a little and pulled mildly towards one. The other dogs were in a dog meet Training so we did not interact. We returned to the building. When arriving back at the kennel, the door was only slightly open. Harry Potter nudged the door further open himself with his nose and hopped in. He was easy to unleash. When I returned after filling out his walk sheet, he was laying down on his bed again. (See photo) Per volunteer 8/2: Kennel Presence: He was laying on his bed sleeping when I approached. I made a few noises and he looked right up at me and got up to come to the front of the kennel with a wagging tail. Leash Skills: On leash he pulls moderately. Sociability: Very affectionate and loose and wiggly in the play yard! He came up to me to solicit pets, rubbing against my legs and hands. Super treat motivated and an expert at catching them! Quite snatchy with the treats, so recommend tossing or an open palm. Very sweet boy!! Just need some training on manners with taking treats. Also is a pretty skinny boy who seems to be in bad shape, so I’m not sure when he was last getting regular meals. Makes sense he takes the treats eagerly. He is quite jumpy to solicit attention. Very social boy!! Play: He seems to like toys, however doesn’t know how to fetch them back. Dog Interaction: Didn't get any meets today Returning to kennel: He walks back into the shelter calmly without pulling. Went back into kennel with no issues and allowed me to unleash with a wagging tail and loose body. Color: Giving him double gold due to jumpiness and snatchiness and friendliness. Per staff 8/1: Scared but tolerated all handling, very food motivated! Per staff 7/31: Low energy. Very sweet, loves people. Per staff 7/30: Super friendly, allowed all handling and picking up. Immediately ran up to greet us tail wagging when called over on scene. MEDICAL: On 8/5, Harry Potter was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold.” He tested positive for pneumovirus, but retested negative on 8/13. On 8/14, he was prescribed doxycycline which he is scheduled on until 8/27. On 8/1, Harry Potter received a vet exam for his skin issues. He had erythema and thick yellow debris in both ears, mild calculus on his teeth, and a thin body condition. He also had a diffusely thin and brittle haircoat with patches of alopecia. His skin was thickened and scaly with crusts and excoriations. No live fleas were present at the time of exam, but live fleas were seen at intake. The overall assessment was a widespread skin infection with bacteria and yeast, likely caused by allergies or ectoparasites, with a negative skin scrape making allergies the more likely cause. He was diagnosed with an ear infection which was treated with EKT, and prescribed Nexgard, clindamycin, fluconazole, and hydroxyzine. Medicated baths two to three times per week and follow-up care with a veterinarian were recommended to help manage his suspected allergies. During his intake exam on 7/30, Harry Potter weighed 52.2 pounds and was noted to be in lean body condition. His eyes were clean, though he had a small cut near his left eye. His front teeth were white, while his back teeth had tartar buildup. His ears were dry and crusty, and he had live fleas as well as cuts and areas of missing hair across his body. Per staff 7/30: Hair loss all around dog’s body, overgrown nails, irritated paw pads from heat and sores from itching. - Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
