My story

POSITIVE ATTRIBUTES: Athens is a super-handsome guy who loves to cuddle once he is comfortable! He likes kids and dogs. Athens would enjoy being an indoor/outdoor cat! His previous home reported he would try to get out whenever he could and seemed to enjoy being outside so we are looking for adopters who can provide a safe indoor/outdoor option for him. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Athens was urinating outside of the litter box in his previous home. Here, hes been mostly successful using the litter box. Urinating outside of the litter box can be a very challenging behavior to navigate and adopters should be prepared to start him off in his own pee proof space. This can be a small bedroom or larger bathroom or walk-in closet, but would ideally be a space where Athens can comfortably decompress after his transition out of the original home and shelter stay. The space should be easy to clean with enzymatic cleaners if an accident should happen. Adopters should be comfortable with confining him in his space for as long as it takes for him to be displaying calm, confident, affiliative body language and be using his litter box 100% reliably for several days in a row. Adopters should plan for no less than two weeks, but it could take longer for him to settle in and use the box reliably. Once Athens is settled into the home and ready to start going outside, adopters should get him on a consistent routine/schedule so that he knows what to expect! Cats thrive on predictability. Start building a routine the moment you bring a cat home, and keep that routine consistent every day. We recommend having a feeding schedule so your cat can expect when their food is coming. The PM meal is most important as it will condition your cat to know when to come inside at night. Make sure you call them back at night and feed them in the home! COMPATIBILITY: DOGS: Yes! Athens previously lived with a dog and they had been known to cuddle up. Placement with a cat-savvy dog ok!CATS: Possibly, no historyKIDS: Yes, previously lived with kids and was known to cuddle up to them Stop by our Nevins Farm Adoption Center to meet Athens. We have open adoption hours Tuesday-Sunday from 12pm- 4:30pm, No appointment is needed to speak to a staff person regarding available pets. You are welcome to enter our cat rooms during open hours. Staff and volunteers will be happy to assist you!

If you have any questions or would like to adopt ATHENS, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
