My story

At 5 years old and 16 pounds, Daisy Mae is a darling little Shih Tzu with a heart full of love...but a backstory that's left her with some steep learning curves. Daisy spent her early years as a breeder. Her basic needs were met, but she was never taught how to be a loved companion. House training? Walks? Steps? Toys? She had NO idea. And while she’s come a long way, Daisy is still very much a work in progress. Potential adopters need to consider whether they're ready for the reality of that. Let’s be honest: housebreaking is Daisy's biggest challenge. Daisy doesn’t yet understand that she’s supposed to go outside. Years of hormonal marking have made her habits hard to break. Her foster has been working diligently for weeks—and there is some progress—but this is not a quick or easy fix. What helps: Taking her for short walks every couple hours (yard time isn’t enough) Heavy praise when she goes Close supervision or a playpen when inside No pee pads (they backfire for her) Keeping her with you—crating or isolation upsets her She’s doing well overnight when sleeping in the bed, but she’s not ready to be left for long periods without a break. The family who adopted her from the breeder tried their best but tapped out after 7 months. She’s the kind of dog who needs someone truly committed to seeing her through, however long it takes. Why does she deserve the effort? Because Daisy is pure love. Despite everything, she is sweet, happy, and affectionate. She gives the gentlest kisses, obssesses over squeaky toys, and looks at you like you hung the moon. She gets along with other dogs (playful once she knows they're safe) rides well in the car, and is quiet—unless she feels abandoned. Other things to know about Daisy: *She’s brachycephalic (short-nosed) and can overheat quickly *Her front legs are bowed (even for a shih-tzu), so long walks are out, but she enjoys her short daily neighborhood jaunts *High grooming needs – her coat was severely matted and she’s currently sporting a summer shave *She loves her crate as long as her person is near—she doesn't do 'solo' well Daisy Mae isn’t an “easy dog,” but she’s a loving, loyal furbaby who deserves someone just as devoted as she is. If you believe every dog deserves a second chance—and you're ready for the commitment it takes, Daisy is sure to be worth the effort. Adoption Fee: $350 – INCLUDES spay/neuter, microchip, vaccines, and current prevention Apply at: https://pawsandprayers.org/adoption-application/   (Please note: inquiries through Petfinder or other sites are NOT applications.
