This sweet, wonderful boy came into rescue after being hit by a car and left with multiple fractures in his pelvis and leg. He was in excruciating pain and unable to walk. Many specialists gave grim opinions—even suggesting euthanasia—but Ruby Whiskers Rescue saw the spark in him and refused to give up. After weeks of evaluations, rest, pain management, and eventually an FHO surgery, Bruno began to heal. His transformation has been nothing short of amazing. He’s now walking, exploring, and living life like a dog who never experienced such trauma. While he’ll require daily pregabalin (a low-cost medication available at most pharmacies) for lifelong pain management, you’d never know the journey he’s been on by looking at his goofy grin and wagging tail. 🐾 A Few Things to Know About Bruno: Age: Just over 1 year old Size: Medium Training: Crate trained and potty trained Knows "sit" and “off” but only listens if treats are involved (typical smart pup!) Needs continued basic training Leash: Pulls when walking, so a harness and training are recommended Chewer: Loves to gnaw! Will try to nibble your hands (gently), so provide nylabones, chews, and durable toys (he's not a fan of rubber toys) Food: Free-feeds throughout the day and has no food aggression Treats: Loves all kinds! Knows the "wait" trick with a treat on his nose Play: LOVES to play with other dogs. He respects their boundaries and body language Personality: Energetic, goofy, affectionate, and a total snuggler once he’s tired Sleeping: Sleeps in his crate or on a dog bed—he’s flexible Cues: Will whine or pace when he needs to go out 🏡 Bruno’s Ideal Forever Home: Bruno would do best in a home with: Another playful dog to keep him company Older children (he might accidentally knock over toddlers) A fenced yard where he can safely run and play An active family who can keep up with his energy Patience and love—he’s still learning and recovering He may have spent a long time confined while healing, but now he’s ready to explore, thrive, and be part of a loving family who sees him not as “the injured dog” but as the vibrant, goofy, brave boy he is. Bruno will melt your heart—just like he’s already melted ours. 🐾 This dog is currently located in Chicago's southwest suburbs and can be seen by appointment once an adoption application is completed and approved by the rescue. Please note that we cannot hold dogs for any reason. If the dog or puppy is not yet fully vetted, we can only consider applications from adopters within an hour's drive or 40 miles of Lemont, IL, due to required vet visits at our partner veterinarians. For fully vetted dogs or puppies, we welcome applications from out-of-state or beyond the 40-mile radius. Please only apply if you are ready to meet and welcome a new companion into your home within five days of approval. Breed and Age Information: Unless the puppy was born in our care, we cannot guarantee the breed or age. Breed and age estimates are based on veterinary advice, shelter records, physical appearance, and information provided by previous owners. The adoption fee includes: Spay/neuter (performed at one of our partner veterinarians as scheduled by the rescue) Microchip Rabies vaccine DHPP vaccine Bordetella vaccine 4DX test (Heartworm, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichia, Lyme Disease) General wellness care, including deworming, heartworm prevention, and flea/tick prevention Your adoption fee also helps support medical care for other rescue animals, including heartworm treatments, surgeries, and emergency care. Spay/Neuter Policy: We spay/neuter dogs at 16 weeks or older, at the discretion of the rescue and in consultation with our partner veterinarians. While some veterinarians recommend delaying the procedure based on a breeds projected size, as a rescue, our primary goal is to prevent unwanted litters. Spaying and neutering also provide significant health benefits, including cancer prevention and reducing behavioral issues. The American Animal Hospital Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association support pediatric spay/neuter for cats and dogs as early as 16 weeks. We carefully assess each case to determine the best timing for the procedure. Interested in Adopting? Submit an adoption application at www.rubywhiskers.org/adopt
