My story

Trentino is living in a foster home. Please submit an application from our website and/or email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to learn if you are a match! Have you ever seen a face this adorable? We hadn't either, so when we laid eyes upon this precious soul down at Chicago Animal Care and Control we knew we had to have him! A week before taking Trentino in, we had taken his sister Sissily. We then realized that Sissily had come from a home along with two other dogs, Trentino and Siena, both of which we also took in! All three dogs are so wonderful. Trentino and Sissily looked like twins, we could not believe there could be two such ridiculously cute pouty faces in the entire world let alone at CACC! Trentino arrived at CACC from a home that could no longer care for him. for unknown reasons. Like his siblings, Trentino was extremely malnourished. He weighed ten pounds less than he does now. In that weakened state, it is no wonder that he caught the "kennel ick" which quickly escalated into pneumonia. A day after arriving to our shelter from CACC, we made the decision to hospitalize Trentino. Trentino was then discharged, relapsed shortly thereafter, and then spent another few nights at the ICU on oxygen and IV antibiotics. Throughout this ordeal, Trentino was so lucky to have the support and care of his amazing foster mom, Ellen! Ellen truly helped to nurse him back to health, until Trentino was well enough to finally be neutered and cleared for adoption. We are so excited for this boy to make his debut! He is a total sweetheart who loves people, napping during the day, and is easy to walk with zero reactivity. He is comfortable being crated for a few hours, or can be trusted to free roam for a short period too. His foster mom writes, "Trentino is a large bundle of sweetness who loves all people, his toys and his leash! He will put the front of his body in your lap and give you hugs for as long as you let him. He loves if you sit on the floor and he can lay on your lap and lean against you. He will happily chase a toy you throw a few times then triumphantly take it aside to chew. He is very gentle when taking treats and prefers you place them on the floor instead of taking them from your hand. He has simple tastes - dry dog food with nothing mixed in is his favorite! He came to us extremely skinny and is now the handsome boy he was meant to be. He can still gain a few more pounds to get to his ideal weight. Trentino is still getting used to the idea of going out into a yard. He is most comfortable when he is taken out on a leash and then taken off the leash to do his business. He hasn't figured out how to "ask" to go out yet, so it's important that he's taking out or walked regularly. He is good in his crate (he appreciates a treat to encourage him to go in!) and we crate him when going out for more than an hour or so. At night he sleeps in their bedroom. Because of this size and newfound enthusiasm, we believe Trentino would do best in a home with older children. He was a bit too much for our toddler grandchildren!" We hope you will ask about this wonderful boy today! Trentino’s adoption fee is $300. This animal is neutered, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Trentino, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
