My story

Sophie is living in a foster home. Please submit an application from our website and/or email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to learn if you are a match! Scroll through her pictures to see her cute video content! 2 year old Sophie came from Chicago Animal Care and Control, where she had been surrendered by her owner, for unknown reasons. When we met her, she was so sad and shut down, and we really wanted to help her, so we brought her to Heartland. Shortly after arriving to Heartland, Sophie was involved in a freak accident, and her left front leg was injured from jumping out of a car window. Our fearless girl wound up having to have her leg amputated due to the severity of the injury. We were so sad for her and were so worried that the recovery would be hard on her. Sophie quickly showed us how resilient she is - and adjusted like a champ! We were amazed at how quickly she was up and running after her surgery. She truly was not slowed down one bit! Sophie has two very dedicated, wonderful foster moms who "share" the responsibility of fostering her. When one travels or cannot watch her, Sophie packs her overnight bag and stays with the other foster mom. She ADORES both of them, and all the people she has met already during this journey. She is an active, energetic, and curious dog who, we are convinced, could participate in the doggy Olympics, 3 legs and all! Her favorite thing to do is swim, and she is darn good at it. She loves to play with the hose. Her other favorite things are squeaky toys, particularly her yellow squeaky heart toy that she has had since she first came to Heartland. She chewed it so much that it eventually lost its squeak, but she still loves it for emotional support. Here is what Sophie's foster mom has to say about her. "Meet Sophie — a three-legged sweetheart with a heart full of love! Don’t let her tripod status fool you — this girl can keep up with the best of them. She walks confidently (and strongly), tackles stairs (carpeted ones are her favorite), and can hop onto beds, couches, and even into the car. Sometimes she gets a little help getting down, just to be gentle on her leg. Sophie is the ultimate companion. She adores people and wants nothing more than to be near her humans. Her days are mostly mellow — she's a pro at napping — but she also gets the occasional burst of zoomies and loves playing with her squeaky toys. Completely housebroken, Sophie is great at letting you know when it’s time for a potty break. She’s an easygoing, affectionate pup who will fill your home with love and cuddles." Sophie has overcome so much with grace and strength — now she just needs a forever home to call her own. Sophie's adoption fee is $300. This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Sophie, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
