When our volunteer first saw Houdini at the shelter, she thought the kennel was empty— until she noticed a round dog bed move ever so slightly. Curious, she gently touched the bed and poof!— out popped a tiny, scared pup who had been hiding inside. He may have been frightened, but the moment she picked him up, Houdini melted into her arms. On the ride home, true to his name, he magically escaped his crate and wiggled his way to the front seat… because clearly, the best place to ride is on your rescuer’s lap. Houdini is a 3-4 month old Jack Russell-Chihuahua type mix, weighing in at just a handful of pounds but packing a whole lot of heart. When he first arrived in his foster home, he was shy and wary of people— his past hasn’t been easy. But slowly, with patience, safety, and the help of his foster dog sibling (Gemini), he’s learning to trust. Houdini’s daily life is a sweet balance of porch lounging, couch cuddling, and energetic playtime with his doggie friends (and sometimes his foster family’s three young kids, who adore him). He is still most comfortable around other dogs— he loves dogs of all sizes and is happiest following them around and joining in the fun. People? He’s getting there. He might run for cover when you approach, but once you scoop him up, he settles right in for pets and snuggles. He’s a champion couch buddy who will curl up next to you or in your lap once the busy part of the day is done. Houdini is working on potty training (he uses pee pads in his pen at night) and hasn’t started leash walks just yet because he's not quite done with vaccines. He’s not much of a barker unless he’s playing, and while he’s fond of chewing the occasional stuffed toy to bits (puppy life!), he’s not a digger or a troublemaker. The perfect home for Houdini is one with another friendly dog who can show him the ropes and help him continue to come out of his shell. He’ll need a patient family who understands that love and trust take time— and that the most rewarding moments come when you see a once-scared pup light up with joy. Our favorite thing about Houdini? Watching him dart happily through the yard, convincing his once “velcro” foster sibling that playing under bushes is the best thing ever. He’s a little magician, alright—he’ll sneak right into your heart before you even know what happened. July 7, 2025, 3:41 pm
