My story

Sorry for the graphic photos, but we had to see, touch, and smell that rotting ulcerated tumor ? and poor little Rosemary had to live with it hanging off of her for who knows how long ? So consider yourselves lucky you only have to see photos. This sweet senior is the last of the 9 dogs we partnered with our friends at Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge to help this past week, and was in the worst shape. Besides the huge ulcerated mammary tumor making it hard for her to walk (which would have been completely preventable had she just spayed many years ago) emaciated, starving, anemic, and had painfully rotting teeth. But she was a happy little sweetheart who clearly wanted to live, scarfed down food, and has been soaking up the attention. We feared help may have come too late for her, but her chest x-rays were clear of any cancer spread so we knew we had to give her a chance. Our vets at Country Willow Veterinary Hospital fixed all her problems tooth to tail (well toothless now!). 2 of the smaller tumors removed were benign, and the larger one was cancer but no sign of spread at this point. She’s gaining weight, loves to cuddle with human and doggie friends in foster, and is recovering beautifully from her massive surgeries. A true gem of a dog who appreciated every day and can’t wait to live out her life as a cherished family member. She’s an old lady at least 10-12 probably, with a bit of a wobbly neurologically abnormal gait but gets around pretty well and we haven’t seen a mean bone in her little body. Your generosity helps us pull off miracles for deserving local dogs like Rosemary over and over again, month after month, year after year. Please consider a donation so we can continue to be there to help overlooked seniors like this special girl. Email njwoof@cs.com if you would like to meet and adopt Rosemary in Northern NJ. Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Rosemary, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
