My story

Meet Bukbuk ACCT-A-223465! Bukbuk is a 1-year-old male who came in as an owner surrender on 6/20 along with Momma 223464 due to the owner moving. Videos: Bukbuk Meets Pumpkin! https://youtube.com/shorts/K1gx9mYJibA?feature=share Behavior Notes: Per volunteer 6/25: “I got permission by the behavioral team to take out BukBuk with another volunteer. Approaching his kennel, BukBuk was laying underneath of his Bed trembling in fear, we lifted the bed and he came to the front of his kennel and pancaked himself down. He allowed the leash to go over his head and once leashed with a little bit of leash pressure he hopped out of his kennel. He started to walk but then put the breaks on and started to pancake and back up. He had whale eyes and a stiff body out of fear. Because he was trying to back up under the kennels we decided to loop him under his belly so he wouldn’t hide under there. Again he began to walk but then quickly pancaked. We decided to walk him back to his kennel. I then got out Momma who came in with him and is in the kennel next to him. Once he saw her he hopped out of his kennel with a loose body, soft eyes and a mid wagging tail. He approached her and gave her kisses on the face. I started to walk Momma and BukBuk and the other volunteer started to follow. Again, he stopped and started to pull back on the leash towards his kennel. The shelter was very loud at this point and the dogs around him were barking which I think made his fearfulness go up. We decided to put him back in his kennel and try from the back side as it is more quieter back there. A staff member who brought him in saw us with him and offered to help as she said that he walked when her and another staff member had him looped together. She looped him around his belly and her and the volunteer and BukBuk began to walk and follow me and Momma. We walked him through the med hallway into the regular hallway. Once BukBuk didn’t hear any dogs he relaxed so much and began walking with just the volunteer and following Momma. His body wad loose, his eyes were soft. Once Outside BukBuk used the bathroom and he seemed to be housebroken. He is very attached to Momma and followed her anywhere she went. We took him into the volunteer room and he was great! He greeted us with a loose body, low/mid wagging tail, soft eyes. He came over to me allowed all handling, came and sat in my lap. He solicited attention from me. He was a different dog out of his kennel. He took fresh pet from both of our hands. We had no issues from him. At times he would go under the table but I would call him out and he would come over. At this time we still had Momma with him and her being Relaxed with us definitely helped him. Going back through the kennels we walked him back in the kennels and we had no issues he followed Momma and hopped right in his kennel.” Per staff 6/24: “Sat with him for ~20 minutes. Found him as per other memos shaking and trembling, laying flat, eyes wide and pupils dilated. Took some canned chicken pieces - but eventually, and with coaxing. Tolerated gentle pets on the head. Was able to leash him but he resisted coming out of the kennel, shoving his head underneath his water bucket. Attempted to guide him out the other end of his kennel, but that didn't work either. He allowed me to remove the lead without issue, I left his blankets on the opposite end of his kennel in case he preferred resettling there (away from the noise/traffic of the kennel aisle) and pinned up blankets on either end of the kennel to reduce distractions and (hopefully) noise.” Per staff 6/23: “Laying flat pancaked in kennel shaking and trembling, lip licks, whale eye, immobile. Slowly got the leash and waited for him to come out which he did, very tentatively. Tail tucked. Immediately returned to kennel: high FAS, recommending medication.” Per staff 6/20: “Use caution when handling animal . Previous owners stated that dog has never been walked on leash ever. When trying to get dog to kennel it would put the brakes on and pancake . was able to check in using a muzzle for safety of patient and handlers . animal seems to be shut down out of fear.” Per owner: “Great with family, playful, not used to other people. Lived with children. Crate trained, the girl loves to walk but the boy (Bukbuk) doesn’t. Will bark at strangers at first and then calm down, loves children. They are awesome, best family dog.” Medical Notes: Per an exam on 6/23: “P will not come out of his kennel for anyone, including the dog he came in with and buries his head in the ground to avoid being leashed, then completely plants himself when pressure is applied, so handlers have been unable to remove him from his kennel. Requesting medication evaluation for anxiety. Subjective Flagged by behavior dept to evaluate for behavior medication Also noted during intake exam patient was incredibly shut down Assessment Severe FAS in shelter Plan Started on Gabapentin and Trazadone” Per an intake exam on 6/20: Bukbuk was found to be in good general health. He was noted to be “depressed/ shutdown.” ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia. We are open for adoptions 7 days a week.
