My story

Are you looking for a quiet, gentle soul who will greet you with welcoming paws when you walk into the room? A handsome boy who loves snuggling on laps and soaking in all the pets he can get? Then Smokey is your boy! When Smokey arrived at Dakin, it was clear that the hustle and bustle of the shelter was a bit too much for him, but after parking his paws in foster care, he’s really blossomed! He’s a Love, with a capital “L” for sure and is even social when visitors arrive. Smokey’s hobbies includes batting around catnip mice, swatting wand toys and believing that sooner or later he’ll catch that elusive laser beam. He occasionally watches cat TV, but you need not worry about parental controls because he prefers to look out the window at real birds. Celebrity birds don’t impress him. He can still be a little jumpy at different noises but, overall, is quite a trooper for someone who has to adjust to changes in his life. Foster mom says her only problem with Smokey has been getting good photos because he keeps asking for pets! Looking for your next best friend? Smokey could be your boy! Change is hard for this cat. This cat will be very nervous when you first bring them home. You will need to set up a room with a litter box, food, and water. It will take days for this cat to become comfortable and confident in the new home. This cat will be going home with a behavior plan that will need to be followed in order for everyone to transition successfully. Ready to Adopt? You have two options: #1- VISIT IN PERSON Come during our open adoption hours: Tuesday - Saturday,12:30 - 3:00pm. You’ll be able to meet available cats in the shelter. (Cats in foster care are not available for in-person visits.) #2- ADOPT REMOTELY OR PLACE A 24-HOUR HOLD** If you’re ready to adopt without meeting the cat first, or you’d like to place a non-refundable $25 hold to reserve a cat for 24 hours, just call or email us: (413) 781-4000 x 1 springfield@dakinhumane.org. We are often helping other clients when you call, but we return voicemails and emails within 24 hours. **Holds are not available on Saturdays and during adoption events. -------------------------------------------- All cat adoption fees include; -spay/neuter -rabies vaccine -current distemper vaccines (may need additional boosters with your veterinarian) -FeLV/FIV blood test -microchip implanted & registered to the adopter -treatment of fleas/ticks/ear mites -veterinary exam and health certificate at Dakin -free vet exam within 30 days after adoption with participating veterinarians Most pets have also received other medical care while with us. Your veterinarian may recommend additional health care for your new pet.
