My story

Welcome Sammy! 💙Foster within 1 hr of Virginia Beach Sammy is a 2-year-old Smooth Collie with a gentle soul and a whole lot of love to give. He’s dog-friendly, cat-friendly, and absolutely adores people — there are no strangers in Sammy’s world, only future friends. He’d likely do well with kids 10 and up, especially those as tall as him (his head is literally counter height). While he’s very gentle, he loves to jump up for hugs — which could easily knock over a small child — so we’re sticking to older kids only. At over 70 lbs and taller than a standard 48” crate, Sammy is a crate-free kind of guy and must live in a one-level home. He can do one or two steps outside, but full flights of stairs are a no-go. Sammy also doesn’t like being left alone on a different floor — if you're home and he's not near you at night, he’ll let you know he’s not happy about it. He sleeps best where his people are. He’s showing signs of prior house training and is adjusting well in his foster home. However, he was recently rehomed into a neglectful situation where he wasn’t consistently fed. As a result, he now guards toys and food from other dogs. This is likely a new behavior, and his foster is working gently on positive reinforcement. He’s fine with people around food and toys, but he must be fed separately from other dogs, and he won’t be placed with young children due to his possessiveness around toys. Ideal setups for Sammy: 🏡 One-story home only 🛋️ Free-roam lifestyle — no crating 🦴 Fed separately from any other dogs 🧒 Children 10+ only 🗑️ Trash cans stored in cabinets or a pantry 🚪 Fenced yard required 🐱 Great with cats 🐾 Loves people and sticks close to home 🚗 Rides well but needs help getting into vehicles Sammy would thrive as an only dog, or with a very mellow companion dog who doesn’t mind sharing attention but doesn’t expect to share toys.
