My story

Cleo (also called Cleopatra and Cleocatra) (born 12/15/2021) weighs 9 pounds, enjoys classical music and sways and taps to the rhythm!! In addition to the arts, Cleo also loves climbing up our cat trees, running through the kitty tunnels, and is truly content to relax in your lap or sit by a window and enjoy the view. It is hard to believe that this sweet, loving kitty was left outside in a carrier on her own. This is how we found her… It was a freezing day when a neighbor stopped by to let us know about an abandoned cat by the Queensboro Bridge. The woman said that she had noticed the black cat and an empty pet carrier a few weeks before. Now the cat was living in a junk-filled area below the bridge. We walked over and found this scared little girl cowering by a fence. Our cat caregivers and nursing staff tried their best to coax her to come to them, but every time she came close, some loud sound coming from the bridge made her run and hide. We left food and water and came back an hour later to find she had eaten everything. A storm was coming in the next day or two and we knew it would be too much for her. We set out a humane trap with food in it, knowing she was starving. A few hours later we got our girl and brought her to the Society. As soon as she got inside, she was more relaxed and easy to handle. Our doctors discovered that she was spayed, so she was once someone’s pet. Cleo, as we named her, was underweight, dehydrated and had several open wounds. We nursed and nurtured her and today, Cleo is healthy and thriving. We really appreciate that you want to give a shelter animal a home. The Humane Society of New York was founded in 1904. The Vladimir Horowitz/Wanda Toscanini Horowitz Adoption Center is a no-kill shelter. Our on-site clinic and staff of skilled Veterinarians looks after the health and well-being of every animal here. We also have a great adoption matchmaking team who will gladly take your profile and match you or your pet with just the right cat or dog companion. We start the process once you have submitted an application to us. FOR AN APPLICATION, please visit http://humanesocietyny.org/adoptions/ and download then email your application to hsny.adopt@gmail.com. Our one and only location is: 306 East 59th Street (between 1st & 2nd Avenue) in Manhattan. If you'd like to sponsor Cleo, please email amk.hsny@verizon.net. You can give as much or as little as you like. Your donation is tax deductible. Thank you! For additional information on the Humane Society of New York, please visit: humanesocietyny.org. Thank you!

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Cleo, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
