My story

All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated, and microchipped.  * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee. This dog will be at Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, June 14th from 12-3pm or until adopted. If you would like the first opportunity to adopt, please fill out an application to be considered.     Adoption Fee: $700 Breed: Cairn Terrier mix Age: ~1 year Weight: ~14 lbs Rescued from the shelter Meet Solstice – A Shy Sunshine Who's Blossomed Into a Loyal Shadow Solstice is a 1 year old Cairn Terrier mix with a gentle heart, soulful eyes, and a deeply affectionate nature. Rescued from the shelter, this 14-pound sweetheart has come a long way from the timid girl who once shook in her crate. Today, she’s a playful, cuddly shadow dog who’s happiest wherever you are. Daily Life with Solstice: Solstice starts her day around 7 a.m. with a quick walk, then cuddles back into bed for a little extra sleep. She eats breakfast closer to 8:30 and then finds the sunniest patch of carpet to lounge in. Her afternoons are a mix of backyard lounging, toy-stashing, and supervised squirrel-watching, with a longer walk around 3:30 p.m. She enjoys dinner at 6 and ends her day snuggled up beside you—on the couch, in her bed, or (ideally) in your room at night. She must sleep close to her people—shutting her out of the bedroom will earn you a heartfelt cry and some dedicated scratching at the door. Personality & Temperament: Solstice is affectionate, playful, and incredibly devoted. Once she warms up, she’s your constant companion—following you from room to room, waiting at the door when you leave, and curling up wherever you're settled. She’s a natural snuggler who loves belly rubs, hugs, and nestling into cozy corners (or shrubs) for naps. At first, she was reserved with new people and needed space to decompress. But with time and love, she transformed into a toy-loving, tail-wagging sweetheart who even has favorite hidey-holes throughout the house. New visitors still make her nervous, and she may bark at first, but with calm reassurance, she relaxes and learns to trust. Play & Exercise: Solstice has little bursts of playful energy throughout the day. She loves a good game of tug-of-war or fetch and takes her toys seriously—often hoarding them in her bed between play sessions. She also enjoys lounging outside and exploring the yard, so a securely fenced yard is a must. Walks & Socialization: Solstice walks beautifully on leash—no pulling, no reactivity. She calmly observes other dogs, people, and critters on walks. She’s shared her home with a senior dog and has been respectful, occasionally engaging in light play but mostly coexisting peacefully. Housetraining & Crate Use: She’s housetrained and will go to the door when she needs out. Just be sure to take her out first thing in the morning—otherwise, she may have an accident. Solstice is not a fan of overnight crating, but she does well in a car crate and usually settles in after a few minutes (she likes music to calm her nerves!). Ideal Home: Solstice is looking for a quiet, loving home where she’s (hopefully!) allowed on the furniture and kept close. She would thrive with someone who is home often or can provide lots of quality time, cuddles, and gentle structure. A backyard is a huge bonus, and while she’s fine being left alone for stretches, she’s happiest when her people are nearby. She’d do well with or without another dog. Why Adopt Solstice? She’s incredibly smart, intuitive, and deeply loving. She knows simple commands like “stay,” “come,” and “stop,” and gives the kind of full-body snuggles that remind you what unconditional love really means. If you’re looking for a sweet soul who just wants to love and be loved, Solstice is ready to be your new best friend.June 12, 2025, 5:01 am
