My story

Kelby is a ray of sunshine with a goofy grin and an even bigger heart. She came to BARCS after her family was evicted, but in her foster home she has blossomed into a playful, affectionate, and curious young dog who is ready to take on life’s adventures with her forever family.Kelby is the perfect mix of silly and sweet. She loves to play with anything she can get her paws on—rocks in the yard, the watermelons in her foster’s garden, even knitting projects—but she has a special soft spot for plushies and a good game of tug-of-war. She’s an active girl who loves to bunny-hop around the house with her toys, but she balances that with plenty of naps. Like most teenagers, she plays hard and then snoozes hard, often leaning against her foster mom or curling up on the couch while she works on her laptop.Walks and outdoor adventures are some of Kelby’s favorite activities. She’s wonderfully non-reactive to other dogs on leash, checks in frequently with her handler, and is always curious about the world around her. Rabbits, squirrels, and even deer will sometimes catch her attention, and she may pull at first, but she redirects quickly and happily keeps moving. Whether it’s a quiet stroll through the neighborhood or a weekend hike, Kelby is a cheerful and enthusiastic walking partner who loves being outside.Inside the home, Kelby thrives on structure and routine. She is both house-trained and crate-trained, though her foster notes that she’s a true escape artist when it comes to wire crates. Switching to an Impact crate has been a total game-changer, giving Kelby the security she needs. With consistency and positive reinforcement, Kelby is learning to see her crate as a safe, comfortable place to relax. She’s food-motivated—especially when hot dogs are involved—and proudly shows off her “sit.” With her smarts and eagerness to please, she’ll pick up new skills quickly.Kelby is affectionate without being overwhelming. She loves to lean against her person for reassurance, rest her head in a lap, or curl up nearby while the day goes on. She can be a bit of a velcro dog if allowed, but with clear boundaries and a consistent routine she is settling beautifully. Her foster has found that the more structure Kelby has, the more she relaxes and shows her naturally goofy, loving personality. She is also a dog who loves people of all ages. Kelby has been wonderfully gentle with neighborhood children and has developed her own little fan c
