My story

Oh boy! Our big lovable giant (currently 116 lbs!) has been through a lot. He came in emaciated. He's been through two surgeries on his hips for lacerations. But our sweet boy is a doll - good with kids and other dogs. He doesn't quite understand how doggie doors work but he is potty trained. Like many Danes, he has a sensitive stomach so food transitions should be limited - consistency is key! He kennels well - but we do not recommend  crating him as his elbows show signs of being excessive crating/neglect in the past.   He was adopted by his foster through the SPCA. Then for whatever reason, a month later, the "owner" was caught lying to multiple rescuers about a "stray" from Gainesville she wanted to drop off, but was also caught trying to give him away for free at a Keller dog park, and posting him online for free -- all while saying she was moving the next day to CA or NYC (she couldn't keep her story straight).   At the end of the day, Gaston came to our rescue, even if under false pretenses. We made a police report and we are now free to care for this sweet boy and find him a new home.   He loves playing / rough housing with other dogs. He is a goofy boy who likes to be play mouthy with other dogs. He has gained a lot of weight since originally starting at the SPCA. The wounds on his hips (unknown original) have been surgically treated, tested for cancer (negative), and healed over (some scars). He is potty trained and ready to steal your couch!   We are looking for a home that will keep contact with the rescue as we monitor his heartworm situation and treat him.   Medically:  Neutered  Up to date on shots Ulcerated lacerations surgery fixed and determined non cancerous (scars on his hips) One slight positive heartworm antigen test followed by a negative one, cleared for treatment post adopt at VCA - the rescue will pay for this if he tests positive again but (as is true for all dogs) he needs to stay on a monthly heartworm preventative  Treated for ear infection and diarrhea previously  Ideal adopter would:  Have a 5-6 ft tall fenced yard (he will jump 4 ft fences) or commit to leash only walks Have an understanding of the breed and their unique health needs  Commit to following up with his heartworm preventative and future testing to determine if additional treatment is needed  Have an elevated dog bowl for better digestion  Be ready to invest in toys--this boys likes to shake his toys and bang them against a wall! Be okay with some slobber!    ##2414479##
