Grandpa Homer was one of roughly 25 cats that were rescued from a hoarding situation where they had been abandoned and left without food for months. He's still adjusting and we're still getting to know him. Grandpa Homer was diagnosed with FIV(Feline Immunodeficiency virus). FIV is NOT Feline Leukemia(FeLV). It is a viral infection that makes them immunocompromised and have a harder time fighting off other infections, it is slow-progressing and may never affect a cat. Due to misinformation about the virus, cats like Homer are frequently euthanized or are considered unadoptable, which is NOT true! FIV is mainly passed to another cat through deep bite wounds (saliva directly in the bloodstream), not any wound. FIV+ cats can live with non-FIV cats too as long as they introduced slowly, as it does not spread through sharing toys, dishes, litterboxes or even sneezing. FIV+ cats can live just as long and healthy lives like any other cats without the virus when kept indoors.
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Grandpa Homer, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
