NOT YET TAKING APPLICATIONS – NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION NEW INTAKE 5/16/2025: Laurel - female - approx 1-2 years old - 48.12 pounds - Golden Retriever/Poodle mix Reason for intake: Wow! Ok, so we were contacted about this dog that came into the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter. She was a stray but needed help. We agreed to take her as a medical knowing that if an owner came forward, we may have to send her back. We took her in and contacted our groomer, Wendy. She immediately got her in. The level of matting on this poor dog was next level. We will post additional photos in the comments. Then, the unthinkable happened. An owner actually called OPAS during stray. OPAS contacted us that we needed to bring her back. We were devastated. The owner had by Wednesday (yesterday 5/21/2025, as of this posting) to come and pay the reclamation fees and reclaim their dog. HALLELUJAH, they did not show! OPAS called and said "come get her!". We were so happy! It's probably a good thing they didn't show because we're sure there would've been some type of cruelty charges leveled against them. In any case, why would you get a dog like this and not do one damn thing to address their coat? Doodles have become very popular in the last 5-7 years. Prior to that, it was extremely rare to see this type of dog in rescue or the shelters. Now, because everyone wants one, they are showing up everywhere. The problem is these people get them and don't understand the maintenance and upkeep! PLEASE STOP BREEDING THESE DOGS! ... and if you are breeding at least CHECK OUT THE PEOPLE YOU ARE HANDING THE PUPPIES OFF TO! ... OR... JUST STOP BREEDING THEM! This is just unacceptable. Nevertheless, Laurel is back with us now and heading to the vet after Memorial Day for everything she needs! Stay tuned! NOT TAKING APPLICATIONS: Many dogs, particularly breeder, hoarder or senior dogs, can have multiple medical issues that need addressed. Additionally, sometimes we take in young puppies requiring multiple vaccinations and/or quarantining. In this particular case, we are not yet taking applications either due to age or possible illness or some other reason. We will post when s(he) is ready for adoption. In the interest of fairness, EARLY application submissions will NOT be considered. Please note… we cannot respond to messages/emails, etc., on dogs that are NOT yet available for adoption. Please wait until the dog is available for adoption. We will post him or her on Facebook in our Adoptable Dog Album pinned to the top of our page which you can follow at this link: https://www.facebook.com/share/1B46skRWF5/ OR you can keep checking our website at www.roadtorescuela.org. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding. “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” ~ Gandhi Be responsible ~ Always spay/neuter, keep your dogs on heartworm prevention, vaccinate against disease... and if you bring a pet into your life, commit to that pet for life. Blessings. May 22, 2025, 11:46 am
