My story

Rena arrived at ACCT Philly on May 8, 2025, after being found as a stray outside of a storage unit. While the caller expressed concern that she might have been hit by a car, Rena had no visible injuries—though she was noticeably emaciated and was suspected to have a slight limp. Despite whatever challenges she faced before arriving, Rena has begun to show what a gentle and resilient soul she is. Rena is a quiet, timid, and incredibly sweet girl who responds beautifully to calm and patient interactions. Though initially fearful and hesitant, she has made steady progress with staff and volunteers. With the help of tasty treats and gentle encouragement, Rena allows herself to be leashed and walks politely on a loose leash. Once outside, she remains cautious but will approach softly with a wagging tail tip, gentle kisses, and a lowered, trusting posture. She enjoys calm one-on-one time with people, leaning into soft pets and seeking out reassurance. Rena shows no interest in toys or active play right now—she is still learning to feel safe and would thrive in a quiet, loving home that gives her the time and space she needs to open up and let her full personality shine. Behavioral Notes Per volunteer 5/10: Rena is such a gentle soul with so much potential. She is very timid and cautious in the shelter. I can only imagine what this sweet girl has been through. Despite her timid nature, she allowed me to leash her with ease after I gave her some treats for reassurance so she knew she was safe. Once I had her on the leash, she walked great and didn’t pull at all. While we were outside, her tail was tucked for most of the time but she did give me a few tail wags here and there. Rena would benefit from a patient and loving home that will give her time to open up and really let her true personality shine. She is an absolute sweetheart. 05/10/2025 Per behavior team: She was laying in the crate when I approached, I bent down and she did a tail flutter (just the tip wags). I showed the leash and she stood up and remained in the back. I offered my hand and she sniffed and came closer with ears back, averting gaze, tail flutter, licked my hand. Tried to leash but she backed away, so I used a treat to lure her head through the slip leash loop. She calmly came out of the crate and walked on a loose leash outside, tucked tail, ears back, darts through doorways. I tried to walk her on the grass but the commotion of a group of volunteers working in the pen caused her to pull back towards the door so we went into a pen, tucked tail. In the pen her tail was down and she sniffed the area. I bent down and she approached with head low, lip licks, averted gaze, soft eyes, ears back and was social to the handler. She was loose and relaxed for all body handling with low tail wagging, ears back, gave me some kisses on my chin. No interest in toys or play She stopped short of going into the crate, used treats to coax her back inside.
