My story

Denver - 1 yr, 11 lbs, Terrier Mix, Neutered  This is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Thier Foster Parent Says: "Denver is a sensitive, sweet boy! When he first flew in from LA, he was extremely fearful. In just 48 hours, he has completely blossomed into a true good boy. He is completely potty trained. He has had zero accidents since he has been here. He is good with other dogs, but might need a little time to get to know them. He can also resource guard with other dogs over toys, his bed, and his favorite human. I am currently working on this. He walks well on a leash, but is a flight risk. If he hears a loud sound or something scares him, he will back up and try and escape the leash. He much prefers to go out in a quiet yard and do his business. He has not gone potty on our leash walks yet, but he is 100% potty trained and does all his business in our garden. He loves to play with toys, belly rubs, and he will stand up on his back legs for neck scratches. However, he will only approach you for pets if he knows you. Denver is a nervous boy, and is fearful of new people. He needs to have a patient interaction where he can sniff you and hear your baby voice and have you give him a tasty snack, and then he will be all yours. Having another dog in the house also gives him confidence. He has already improved tenfold in the short time that I have had him, and I know that he will continue to do so in his forever home!" Cuddle Bug Level Denver has a medium cuddle bug level, but I have a feeling as time progresses he is going to move to a high level! He is cuddly but he does not sleep in the same room as me and he only trusts certain people enough to show his cuddly side! Potty TrainedHe is completely potty trained!  Comfy with strangers? Nope — Quite the wallflower, very shy with new people and takes a while to warm up. Afraid when unfamiliar people try to say hi on the street, hides or shrinks back when new people visit the home.  Comfortable with Children? (ALWAYS requires supervision) Yes for 12 and up — may be a little energetic or a little skittish, best with older children that can be extra gentle. He is not mouthy or aggressive, he is just very fearful. He would benefit from a quiet home. Social with Other Dogs? Mostly — Generally good with other dogs but may be picky (scared of certain dogs)  Respectful of Other Animals? (cats, small pets, etc.) Yes — Seems to get along with other animals, either tries to play with them or is mostly uninterested  Mouthy Behavior? Low – Little to no interest in chewing on stuff or putting things in its mouth that aren’t food. Doesn’t try to chew on hands, feet, etc. during playtime, doesn’t wreck your stuff — only chews on appropriate things like dog toys and bones.  Leash Manners? Getting the Hang of it – Probably hasn’t been on a leash much in its life but he is figuring it out. Okay in the city? Sort of — Spooked easily by loud noises and bustling areas but walks pretty well and probably just needs more time to adjust. I do think he would benefit from a non-city home or someone with a yard Jumping on People to Say Hi? Low – Doesn’t jump up on people or dogs. Always all four on the floor, except for when I kneel down he will gently put a paw up to place both his paws on my knees and get pets. It is not a jumping action at all.  Separation Anxiety? Low – Completely fine being left home alone. Doesn’t cry or do anything shitty when you leave the apartment or house.  Crate training? Not at all – Don’t even have one, I’ve puppy proofed and we free range.  Medical statusHealthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm negative; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake How this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Puerto Rico or Southern California. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes. If you have any questions or would like to adopt Denver, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
