Zakari ACCT-A-219434 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Zakari must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER, FOSTER, or ADOPTER by THURSDAY, MAY 29TH at 10AM. Should Zakari’s medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Zakari came to the shelter on May 4th as an owner surrender due to housing instability. Zakari had been with them since birth and was lovingly raised around both adults and young children. At just over two years old, Zakari is a playful, affectionate pup with a zest for life and a big heart. Her former family described her as lovable, high-energy, and friendly with kids, cats, and other dogs alike. She’s crate trained, housebroken, and knows some commands. Since arriving at the shelter, Zakari has shown herself to be a social butterfly with just a hint of nervous energy in this new environment. She greets handlers at the front of her kennel with soft eyes and a wagging tail, and leashes up without hesitation. On leash, she pulls moderately at times out of excitement, but also walks nicely and checks in often. During her outings, Zakari enjoys exploring and meeting new people, accepting full-body handling with ease and even sitting sweetly for treats. She shows interest in toys—especially squeaky ones—but doesn’t guard or hold onto them. Zakari is adjusting well to her new surroundings, but like any young dog, she’ll thrive with structure, enrichment, and continued positive experiences. She’s eager to bond and ready to bring her joyful spirit to a forever home. Zakari is open to going to a home with children and other dogs, so please bring everyone along for a meet! Due to her length of stay, Zakari is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner, foster, or adopter. She presented nervously in kennel with ears tucked and whale eyes, but that immediately changed as soon as she exited her kennel. She was ready to go outside and led us through the kennels. Once outside, she went to the bathroom, and we took her into a yard. She LOVES treats and would sometimes sit for them but then would get impatient and started hopping up on us for them. She allowed petting, but did not actively solicit it. She is a stunning girl with piercing eyes! Per staff 5/6: Meet went well, she was nervous at first but VERY quickly warmed up and solicited pets and snack from the interested adopter. Per staff 5/6, playgroup: Slightly steerable, rough/rowdy, playful, push pull Per staff 5/6:Kennel Presentation: Easy to leash/social. Found Z standing on her kuranda bed - she greeted me with soft eyes, low wags, and approached the front of the kennel when I opened the door. Looped easily, easy exit. Leash Skills: Pulls Moderately On Leash. Occasional bursts of moderate pulling while outdoors - appeared to be eagerness to run ahead and explore. Otherwise, mild-mannered on leash: walked by my side, checked in occasionally. No issues walking back into Adoptions or returning to kennel: hopped right in, slipped lead off without issue. Handleability: Aroused/Allows all handling. Dispelled some nervous energy by occasionally rushing while out on our walk, constantly sniffing and exploring, and in the volunteer office, trotting around, getting her bearings, and soliciting some attention (and sitting nicely for treats) from a couple of the volunteers passing through. Remained fairly loose overall: posture upright, attentive expression, panting. Accepted all-over handling - ears, head, shoulders, back, hind, legs, and allowed me to lift her up by her front legs to check for a spay scar - all without tensing or showing clear appeasement behaviors. Tag: Did not attempt. Toys: Interest but does not take possession. Perked up at the sound of, and chased after a squeak toy, but didn't take possession after investigating. Color Level: Gold. Slight nervousness / arousal and excitability on leash that may throw new handlers. Otherwise very well behaved, just still adjusting to her new environment. Summary of owner surrender notes: Had her since birth and got her from a friend. She is lovable and loves to play. She is housetrained, crate trained, and knows stop, no, don't do that, go. She lived with young children and was described as good with strangers and cats, and playful with children and dogs. MEDICAL:On 5/10, Zakari was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on doxycycline. She tested positive for pneumovirus, but retested negative on 5/21. On 5/24, she was still showing signs of a URI, so was prescribed azithromycin. On 5/5, Zakari was confirmed to be previously spayed. During her intake exam on 5/4, Zakari's eyes and nose were red, but her nose was moist and her teeth were white. She had a clean coat and appeared to be in good health. Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
