PLEASE READ THROUGH THIS BIO THOROUGHLY AS INFORMATION ON HOW TO APPLY IS CONTAINED IN THIS LISTING** For Adoption: Tegan! Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process. To apply for adoption and for more information on our process and requirements, visit our website at https://pounddog.ca/adoption-info/.\ I am pleased to introduce Tegan a gorgeous 4 ½ year old tri coloured Sheltie with the softest coat. Tegan came into our care from being overbred as a mill mama until she was discarded. As with most mill dogs, Tegan was fearful of almost everything in her early days with me. Everything was new and strange. I had to carry her into the house since the door frightened her. She had probably never been inside a house before. Tegan now eagerly goes through my sliding patio door for walks but is still a bit leery of the front door. It’s a work in progress. Loud noises such as motorcycles and the back up signal on trucks trigger Tegan to bark, and especially when it thunders. Because of this she would not be suitable for an apartment or condo and would be best in a house in a quiet suburban or rural area but not in a noisy city environment. She is currently being fostered in a small rural community. As Tegan became more confident we increased both the distance and new areas for our walks. Tegan is a dream to walk. She never pulls unless startled by a loud noise and enjoys a quick pace sometimes or slows down to sniff. She is okay with the light traffic in my area and enjoys 3 walks daily of 30 minutes or longer as well as outdoor time in my back yard on a long line since I don’t have a fenced in yard which would be a bonus for her. Tegan loves being outdoors, sniffing and relaxing now the weather has improved. It’s been a joy to watch Tegan go from a skittish dog on walks to a more confident one. She has a bounce to her step and her tail is up and wagging now. On our walks when we encounter someone coming Tegan will pause waiting to see if they’re friendly or not. She has met several people on our walks but needs to be approached in a gentle quiet manner. Quick movements and loud voices frighten her. Tegan needs time to get to know someone before she’s comfortable with them. I have a few neighbours who are dog savvy and they had no problem meeting Tegan on a first attempt. Tegan has met a few dogs on our walks but is still tentative unless the dog is quiet and gentle. Tegan enjoys being brushed. She loves the attention. She is a dog that will require daily brushing to keep her long coat free of mats and tangles. Tegan crates easily and in the beginning chose to spend most of her time alone in the security of her crate. She still chooses sometimes to go into her crate during the day for a quiet nap while I’m busy elsewhere in the house. Tegan sleeps quietly in her crate through the night and doesn’t make a sound while I’m getting ready for our morning walk. Once I give her a quick cuddle she’s off to the door and waits for me to put on her leash. Tegan is house trained but should have outdoor access every 3 or 4 hours or she may have an indoor accident. Tegan travels in a crate in my SUV but if the ride is longer than 20 minutes she gets car sick. She needs more practice on car rides to get used to them. Tegan has been fostered with a very laid back easy going cocker spaniel. At first Tegan attempted to try to dominate her but with supervision and correction she learned to get along. The 2 dogs often share the same dog bed in the den at night while I watch TV and they love to cuddle on the couch with me. Tegan would be fine as an only dog but could be okay with a laid back, easy going mature male dog. Because of her fearful reactions to loud noises and sudden movements she would be best in an adult only home or with quiet natured teen children. Tegan is a very intelligent dog. She quickly figured out level 1 and 2 treat puzzles and I now use a level 3. As yet she has shown little interest in toys, occasionally picking one up and taking it to her crate to lie on. If you’re ever wondering where that missing sock, shoe or slipper went, first check Tegan’s crate. She occasionally likes to take something of mine to sleep with. Tegan is not highly food motivated and it took her awhile to fully eat her meals and accept treats from me. She was initially quite picky. She has no issues with eating her meals and treats now. Tegan knows the sit command and we’re working on recall. Tegan is due to have a dental with the vet next week to clean up tartar and take care of any other issues. Tegan is very dainty in all her actions. If she wants my attention she gently puts her paw on my leg. When I do my yoga practice Tegan likes to get close or go under me to get petted. Other days she just lies on a nearby dog bed and watches me. Occasionally Tegan will run full speed down the hall and jump onto the couch hoping I’ll join her for a cuddle. In her safe home environment Tegan is a very happy easy going dog. She has turned into a super cuddly dog. Tegan looks forward to our cuddle sessions on the couch and really enjoys both tummy and butt rubs. Tegan is so worth the effort needed to gently guide her on her journey to being more confident. She is highly responsive to positive reinforcement and should do well in obedience training. Tegan has amazed me with her progress since she first came to me as her foster and if you’re that family that would enjoy guiding Tegan on her journey please consider her as a member of your family.
