My story

Leroy Brown arrived at the shelter on March 19, 2025, after being trapped by Animal Control and initially presented as a very shut-down dog. Understandably, Leroy experienced significant fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS) in his new environment. However, thanks to the consistent and dedicated efforts of shelter staff, Leroy has begun to embark on a positive journey toward trusting humans.Initially, Leroy avoided all interactions with staff and volunteers, displaying a clear fear of touch and refusing to walk on a leash. Attempts to leash him would result in him immediately gator-rolling and chewing at the leash, desperately trying to escape. He had to be carried into the shelter, and when approached for handling, he would sometimes air snap out of fear, highlighting his overwhelmed state and extreme anxiety.Encouragingly, Leroy has shown noticeable progress with the patient support of staff. He now allows a leash to be clipped onto his collar without the previous reactions of gator-rolling or snapping. Utilizing a helper dog has also proven beneficial in encouraging him to leave his kennel. When taken outside, using a long line has helped to minimize his sensitivity to leash pressure, allowing him to walk out of his kennel more comfortably. Once in the play yard, Leroy displays a social side, engaging positively with other dogs and enjoying playtime. While he still experiences occasional challenges with leash pressure and consistent leash walking, his interactions with other dogs during playgroup sessions have been a significant positive influence. Leroy has begun to associate the rewarding experience of socializing with other dogs as a positive reinforcement for walking on a leash. While Leroy has made strides, the shelter environment continues to be a source of stress for him. To further support his progress and ensure his continued mental and physical well-being, Leroy would greatly benefit from a calm and quiet foster or adoptive home. This stable environment would provide him with the opportunity to decompress at his own pace, continue building his trust in people, and further develop his leash skills, all while enjoying the companionship of other canine friends. Leroy is on a promising path and deserves a home where he can continue to flourish.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt LEROY BROWN, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
