My story

Meet Tom Bombadil! Tom Bombadil has not had an easy start to his journey with us. Back in March, a good Samaritan kept seeing a cat in her neighborhood that appeared to have an injured leg. Trapping him wasn’t easy, but once she did, she immediately transported him to Animal Friends for urgent care. Tom was in rough shape. With an abscess on his front leg requiring surgery, and a grouchy attitude whenever anyone would attempt to look at this leg, we thought to ourselves… is the leg salvageable? Our staff worked hard to ensure that Tom’s leg was properly cared for, and he went into surgery in an attempt to save the leg. One night, a few days after his limb-saving surgery, Tom started having difficulty breathing. He was rushed to our friends at Veterinary Emergency Group for evaluation, when life threw Tom another curveball – it was evident by his x-rays that sometime in his past, Tom had broken his sternum! After some discussion, it was determined that the sternum was healed, despite being broken previously, and wasn’t causing Tom any discomfort. So, we focused on getting his leg back in working order, and him feeling like his best self. He spent his first night after being discharged from VEG in a foster home. That night, Tom began to make biscuits and roll around on his back for pets – the first sign that this sweet boy was ready to start his healing journey. Tom spent the following month in our Medical Suite with our medical staff where he quickly started getting into shenanigans. Want to sit in your chair? No, sorry. That’s Tom’s chair. Kittens coming into the suite for surgery? Not unless they pass inspection from Tom first! Tom has now been with us for 2 months – and he’s thriving. He will always have a bit of a limp from the damage to his front leg, but Tom doesn’t even notice he’s different. We’re looking for adopters who: • Understand that Tom has been through a lot in life and want to provide him with a comfortable indoor only home. • Understand that he may require medical care in the future in relation to his leg as he continues to heal. • Understand the needs of cats who are FIV+. • Are ok with a cat who is going to cause chaos when he feels like it. • Have plenty of chairs they don’t mind giving up at home. • Do not have dogs… Tom is not a fan. Tom may be able to live with other cats but has been a bit sassy with the other cats visiting the medical suite, and may prefer to live alone. Could you be the final part of this sweet boy's healing journey? Fill out an application -> thinkingoutsidethecage.org All of our animals are altered, microchipped and up to date on vaccines before being made available for adoption.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Tom Bombadil, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
