Harvey - 3 years & 16lbs, Beagle & Chi Mix, Neutered This dog is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Their Foster Parent Says: "Harvey is 3 years old, about 18 pounds, and is the ultimate sweetheart. Shy at first, he warms up quickly and can be found snuggling in his bed with his favorite toy or standing by your side as your watch dog as you do tasks around the house. He is potty trained (with some minor accidents only when he’s super excited, so we try to keep greetings very low energy), fantastic home alone (happily sleeps in his crate), very friendly, and has a gentle demeanor. Harvey sleeps very soundly through the night and is fond of his crate. Harvey can get scared when his surroundings have a lot going on (he will pace but can easily be comforted by calm pets and reassurance) but when Harvey is in a chill atmosphere, avoiding loud noises and high energy from his humans, he is extremely calm and prefers to lounge around and self play. Harvey is a grade-A cuddler when he feels like it and is very comforted by calm pets but is also happy to lounge on his own all day as well. He seems medium energy, keeping up on longer walks but definitely not zooming around the house all day. Harvey is still adjusting to walking on a leash outside, he struggles on a street with loud noises, but otherwise will walk by your side if things are quiet and will go potty when he is feeling comfortable. He doesn’t seem to be very interested in other dogs, not scared but just walks right by them like he’s got better things to do :). He is a playful boy who has mastered fetch and self play with his favorite toys. He is highly food motivated and but is still working on basic commands due to his easily excited nature. Harvey is already a fantastic dog who does really well in an apartment setting due to his crate training, gentle temperament, and overall sweetness. He will benefit from some great training and adjustment to the sights and sounds of the city. He is such a lovely companion, it’s been a joy to witness his sweetness and quirks, the right home will be so lucky to have such a sweet and well behaved boy!" Level of dog ownership experience needed:BEGINNER: This means we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale due to its breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup. Energy levelMEDIUM: Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.) Potty trained?Probably! Adults usually are, but all will have transitional accidents for the first week or so. A consistent walking route and schedule plus finding spots with grass or dirt can help. Social with other dogs?Yes, but we don’t know to what degree yet. Some like to wrestle with every passing pup, others can coexist well but prefer to keep to themselves. We’ll learn more soon. Social with cats? Not sure yet! Some breed mixes that are generally NOT great matches for homes with cats include large hounds, huskies, and shepherds. Comfortable with children? (ALWAYS requires adult supervision)We’re not sure yet, but we try to err on the side of caution. Respectful kids ages 8 and up are probably a safe bet. Children must always be monitored and taught to interact with dogs of any age respectfully. Okay in the city?We don’t know yet. Most adult dogs do well in the city after they’ve had time to adjust to a new environment, but some never adapt and need homes in the burbs. Medical statusHealthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm negative; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake How this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Puerto Rico or Southern California. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives. PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though! This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes. LEARN MORE ABOUT US: socialteesnyc.org and Instagram @socialteesnyc ##2370390##
