Meet Gus – A Beautiful Soul Looking for the Right Match Gus is a striking, 2-year-old black cat with soulful eyes and a quiet strength that captures hearts. He came to us after the tragic loss of his previous guardian—an upheaval that left him grieving and unsure. Since then, Gus has been adjusting to a new world, and we’re learning more about the depth of his personality every day.Gus can be incredibly affectionate: cheek-rubbing, leaning into gentle brushing, and curiously exploring his surroundings. He’s intelligent, observant, and seeks out connection on his own terms. He has also shown signs of learned defensive behavior, where what begins as friendly engagement can quickly shift to swatting or a bite attempt—especially when hands are involved. While Gus is not outwardly aggressive or over-aroused, he can escalate quickly from relaxed behavior to a defensive response, particularly during transitions from brush to hand-petting or when he feels overstimulated or uncertain. He has also shown reactive behaviors near other cats, which may lead to redirected aggression in confined spaces.Gus needs an experienced, cat-savvy adopter who:Understands feline body language and can read early signs of discomfortIs willing to build trust slowly and avoid overstimulating pettingHas a quiet, stable home without young children or other petsCan provide enrichment and routine to help Gus feel secure and in controlWhen Gus feels safe, he is a loving, loyal cat who will thrive in the right environment. He has so much potential—but like many animals who`ve been through loss and instability, he needs patience, structure, and someone who sees the heart beneath the defenses.Be sure to check the “shelter information” box on the listing to see if the pet is located at our Fairfax Campus (4500 West Ox Road, Fairfax) or our Lorton Campus (8875 Lorton Road, Lorton).
