Meet Chori! 8-year-old Chori was brought to Los Angeles Department of Animal Services-South LA Shelter with two broken back legs. The left hind leg looks like an old injury that he didn't receive medical attention for. His right hind leg, while fractured in two places, did bear weight and appeared it would possibly heal and maintain function. From the moment he arrived at FFF on March 17th, Chori has amazed us with his fortitude. He's an adorable little sausage of a guy who has had a hard life and deserves to be in a home filled with warm beds, gentle pets and unconditional love. Our veterinarians determined the best way to help Chori was to amputate the left hind leg that he was literally dragging behind him. On April 29th, Chori had surgery, and as you can see in the video, he is already getting around great only one day later! We are so excited to see this sweet boy have the quality of life the he is deserves! In the weeks leading up to surgery, while Chori was on bed rest, he went on a two-week Frosted Fling with a dedicated volunteer to receive extra TLC in the comfort of a home. His Fling Mom shared: "I am really proud of Chori's progression. He came a long way and was a neighborhood favorite! The one word that sums up Chori’s needs is patience. He is a VERY sweet boy but clearly he had some very tough years, and sometimes he can get scared. If he ever gave me a low growl when I would try to pick him up or put leash on, I’d give him a couple rubs/scratches and circle back in a minute or so. By day 6 he let me kiss his face and was no longer terrified of the leash. Chori loves to explore, sniff, and visit other dogs, so I let him walk a little bit to do his business and then carry him around spot to spot. My goal was to let him be a dog but protect his legs as much as possible. Chori did great with all of my dog's doggie friends of varying size and age, gave them a low growl if they are making him uncomfortable (lots of back leg sniffing), and I could just scoop him up. I was very cautious with dogs as they always found his back legs very interesting. Twice Chori reacted to strangers with intense growls/barking. The first time was a man in the park doing drop-kicks with a soccer ball for his dog to chase. It sent Chori into a spin. The other time was my neighbor doing yard work and we rounded the corner and he was holding a large yard tool. It was heartbreaking to how terrified Chori was. He responded with intense barking until I scooped him up and walked away. I don't have any children, but Chori did not react when our friends' kids came over. To be safe, I kept him in his crate because of his sensitivity to being startled or woken up. Chori let kids (around 8 years old) pet him in the park without any issue. I used crates to help keep Chori contained for periods of time to rest his back legs. He ate his meals in a large crate, and if I needed to move around the house, he would always try to follow, so this was helpful. Chori is sweet, quirky, and FULL of life. I know his forever home will be coming his way soon!" Please stay tuned for updates on Chori's recovery.
