Toast is a sweet and sensitive pup enrolled in our Shelter Scholars program, where he's working on managing kennel stress and building relaxation skills through mat work. With positive reinforcement and calming routines, Toast is learning how to settle his body and mind, helping him feel more at ease both in and out of the kennel. He's making great strides in developing calm behaviors and building the confidence he needs to thrive.Toast's adoption fee is waived as part of our Pitunia Promo! All ACC dogs over 40 pounds have waived adoption fees through the end of May-so there's never been a better time to bring this special guy home. There is an adorable video of me on social media! As he is level 3, we were expecting a challenging-ish dog, but he was one of the easiest dogs I've taken care of. He was so good on the leash. He is a bit clumsy and walked diagonally occasionally, but he was so gentle and never pulled. He walked by so many dogs and people kids and showed 0 reactivity. He even checked in on a pigeon who appeared to be dying :( He did great in the busy McCarren park and remained calm the whole time. All he wanted to do was be close to us. In the car he cuddled up on us instantly and fell asleep. He was even rolling on his back because he was so happy to be inside somewhere cool and quiet. He is an absolute mushy love-bug. He seems so treat motivated (he was picking out the milkbones in the bag of jerky because that is all he wanted lol) and was so attentive! Perhaps he would thrive in a foster home if he is struggling in the shelter because he was seriously SO EASY!! I love this program, thank you! My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Toast may look tough, but he is such a softie. On our borough break, we took a couple long, leisurely walks where Toast loved exploring with his nose; he maintained a comfortable, casual pace with a loose leash and politely passed humans and dogs alike, with an occasional curious sniff. In our apartment, once invited onto the couch, he wiggled around like a happy seal trying to get as comfortable as possible, basking in the attention and soft cushions. It took him a moment to settle and believe his luck, but once he did he was so happy to cuddle and nap. He wags his tail and makes the cutest grunts when you scratch his head. While anxious and overstimulated in the shelter, Toast was quite mellow at home and on our walks. He will need a bit of guidance with house training and some leash training, but he is so attentive and responsive to humans, he should be an easy student. Toast is a great all-around dog, with low-medium energy, and definitely deserves a home that would shower him with love; he will return it in kind! Such a good boy.
