My story

Mel, known to her foster mom as 'Mel Bell', is the sweetest, softest little ball of fluff. A few months ago, Mel was found outside with a group of feral street cats. She had lived with them for about a year after she was likely left behind by her owners. She is now estimated to be about 3 years old and is understandably shy around new humans. She spent the first few weeks in her foster home hiding under the bed, only coming out to eat or to explore when the rest of the house was asleep. Over time, she started to peek her head out to sniff her foster mom's hand and to look at toys. She was visibly interested but very nervous. Slowly she started to warm up, coming out for short periods to ask for pets. Fast forward to now, she roams the whole house, purring and asking for head scratches. She still gets nervous with quick movements, loud sounds, and new people and will run to her safe spaces to hide, but she comes back realizing that it's safe or that the people she's comfortable with are around.   Underneath Mel's shyness, she is a very sweet and silly girl. She loves to give head butts and ask for scratches, sometimes giving air headbutts when she wants love but is nervous to get close. With a slow approach, she will quickly lean into it. She's also very playful. Even when she's hiding, she'll peek her head out and paw at her favorite toys. She likes to watch the resident cats play and will join in if she's feeling brave. She also enjoys independent play, especially with catnip toys or ones that make chirping sounds. You can even find her chasing her tail sometimes! In the evenings, she can be heard scampering about the house, chirping and playing, before heading upstairs to snuggle up in her foster mom's bed.We think that with a gentle approach and some patience, Mel will thrive in her new home. She would do best in an environment on the quieter side and with plenty of places to hide while she adjusts. She would likely do well with older, respectful kids. She does not like dogs, but would do well with other friendly cats given the right introduction. She would likely also enjoy being a single kitty, just her and her human family. This sweet girl is ready for her furever home - apply to adopt Mel today!       This cat has been combo-tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV, received all age-appropriate vaccinations and is altered.   May 27, 2025, 8:40 pm

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Mel, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
