This new friend has just arrived! They have come to us either as a transfer from another shelter, being found as a stray, or have been surrendered to us by their owner. When our friends are new to us, we are typically unsure of their full background, litter box habits, comfort with handling, or experience with other pets or children. Our staff will spend some time reviewing any information provided by previous owners and spend some time with our new friend so that we can better update their biography. This cat has been diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes in cats is most commonly due to obesity and diet, although it is sometimes associated with chronic inflammation of the pancreas and, rarely, hereditary. Diabetes can also be complicated by infections (with dental infections among the most common) and by stress; therefore, diabetic regulation in the shelter can be difficult. Most diabetic cats require twice daily (every 12 hours) injections of insulin, along with a diet that is low in carbohydrates and higher in protein and fat. There are special prescription diets (canned and dry) designed for diabetic cats, although in some cases, working closely with your veterinarian, you may be able to find an acceptable commercial canned food (Few commercial dry foods will work, as dry foods tend to be very high in carbohydrates). Please ask for further details and/or questions! If you are interested in adopting this cat, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific cat but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! We may require all household members, including children, to come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, and a small bag of food to get you started.
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Momma Girl, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
