Name, age, breed: Gemma, 2 yrs, shepherd/rottweiler mix.Likes: Being pet, attention, birdwatching, being outside, walks, napping.Dislikes: Being restrained, the car. What would be the ideal home? I think she would be suitable for a first time owner. She would need around two walks a day to burn her energy as she’s not a super energetic dog. Good with other cats? No.Good with dogs? If introduced properly.Good with children? Not sure.Temperament: Calm, sweet, loving, stubborn.Motivators? She’s a picky eater so good treats can be a motivator.Any commands? Sit, law down, stay, go away (if begging at table), no, in your crate, leave it (working on), paw (working on)House trained? Yes.Crate trained? Yes (in progress, almost finished). How long will it take to settle into a new environment? 3-3-3 rule: First 3 days - Your dog may be overwhelmed and may hide, have a lack of appetite, or test boundaries. Give them space and time to adjust in a quiet room with their bed, food, water, and toys. 3 weeks - Your dog may start to settle in and their personality will emerge. You can expect behavior issues to arise, so set boundaries and expectations with positive reinforcement training. 3 months - Your dog should be comfortable and acclimated to your home. They should know their routine and expect meals and enrichment at specific times.Gemma settled in within the first 72 hours with us.Any special needs or traits an adopter should know? Because of her Rottweiler mix, she has a hard time being restrained or forced to do anything. She has a high prey drive so no small animals would be suitable with her. Other than that, she’s a perfect dog! May guard high valued items. If you think Gemma is the one for you - fill out an application today!
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Gemma, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
