Please contact Paul Slebzak (pauls@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet.Good boy looking for his forever home!CAL NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!! Come meet Cal and other great adoptable dogs this Saturday (7/12) from 12-2 pm at the Petco in Bailey's Crossroads (5825 Leesburg Pike, Bailey's Crossroads, VA 22041)! Name: Cal Best Guess for Breed: Hound and Retriever mix Best Guess for Age: 2.5 years as of Oct. 2024 Gender: Male Approximate Weight: 52 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! Cal has had some brief interactions with cats and done well, which is a good indication that we may do well living in a home with cats. We haven’t seen Cal with kids. We are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living At: DC area boarding partner Check out this video of Cal: https://youtube.com/shorts/O2BVGAIyXZg?feature=share and https://youtu.be/C6RFA6QsEr0. Cal is Looking For: Meet Cal, a handsome 2.5-year-old hound and retriever mix with a tan coat and a heart as golden as his fur! Cal is the perfect combination of playful energy and sweet affection. His hound and retriever mix gives him a fun-loving spirit and a natural curiosity for the world around him—he’ll happily accompany you on all kinds of adventures, whether it's exploring the great outdoors or cozying up for a snuggle session on the couch. Cal is looking for a loving home where he can shine as a loyal companion. If you’re ready for a new best friend who’s equal parts fun and loyal, Cal might just be the perfect match! What My Foster Says About Me: He loves tummy rubs and hugs. He will give a deep moan of appreciation for an ear rub. He gives kisses but not too many. He loves his toys but gets scared if the squeakers are too loud. He likes to play with other dogs and enjoys the dog park and doggie daycare. He also likes to play with his 6 yr old and 8 yr old human foster sisters. When they have friends over he wants to be in the middle of playtime even if he is just sleeping on the couch close to their play. Although there is sometimes confusion over whose toys are whose, so far, Cal has not destroyed any of their stuffies. Just his own. He also takes treats and food very gently to the delight of little hands. Cal is very smart and figured out how to open the doors at doggie daycare! He is also quite food motivated. The combination makes him an excellent training partner. He knows sit and paw. He is working on down and has done very well with potty trained. He has never had an accident in his foster’s home or when he’s been taken to visit friends. For the most part, he walks well on the leash, and knows the “name” game. He is working on not stopping for every smell. During the day and in the late evenings, Cal takes big naps. He sleeps very well in his crate. He would rather be with his people but he doesn’t complain and waits patiently to be let out in the morning. Heartworm Information: Cal is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. Cal has completed the treatment and the four-week post-treatment phase. He is now in the DC area awaiting the six-month follow up test - and his forever home! Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.
